ADVANCE Incentive Fund

As a reflection of institutionalization of ADVANCE initiatives, in its 4th year the annual ADVANCEIncentive Fund was fully supported by an allocation from the URI Provost to the URI Council for Research. The Council for Research Grants Program issues an annual call for proposals. Funds earmarked for proposals that include ADVANCE goals were contained in the Career Enhancement and the Proposal Development Grant Programs as follows:

In support of the efforts of the ADVANCE Program, the Council for Research especially encourages Career Enhancement/Research Proposal Development proposals that satisfy the general ADVANCEprinciples of increasing diversity and promoting equity campus-wide. These principles include: the need to support underrepresented faculty research and provide them with career development and training opportunities, the need to support individual and department efforts that foster climate change, the need to improve and expand upon available networks and social support services for all underrepresented faculty, and the need to increase administrative collaborations that engage in and promote organizational change.

Submission guidelines can be found here.

Previous ADVANCE Incentive Award recipients are eligible for Council for Research grants.

Monthly Topical Lunches

Sometimes faculty navigate the university best through somewhat informal channels. Social networks and the sharing of ideas and resources can be crucial in establishing productive careers. Using the model developed by the Women in the Sciences lunches at URI, ADVANCE organized monthly discussion lunches in which all faculty members are invited, but women are strongly urged to attend by (and with) their mentors/mentees. The lunch series continues post-ADVANCE, thanks to contributions from the STEM deans, the Provost, and the VP for Research. Topical speakers from within and outside URI are invited to discuss issues surrounding the building of a viable research program and a successful, fulfilling career.

Mentor Training Program

Evidence indicates that effective mentoring is one of the most important features in successfully adjusting to a new career. ADVANCE developed a mentor training program to improve the quality of mentor-mentee relationships at URI. The educational features of the mentor training program has been formalized in a web-based tutorial.
