Adventures In Supercomputing During the past four years, The Department of Energy’s K-12 Adventures in Supercomputing (AiS) program has introduced high performance computing methodology to diverse populations of high school students in order to cultivate their interest in mathematics, science and computing. The program currently encompasses 69 high schools in five states: Alabama through the Unversity of Alabama — Huntsville, Colorado through Colorado State University, Iowa through Ames Laboratory, New Mexico through Sandia National Laboratories — Albuquerque and Tennessee through Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Design Your Future: Math, Science, and Technology for Girls A very appealing site created by the design software company Autodesk, whose female founder and CEO Carol Bartz has a strong commitment to encouraging more girls to enjoy science, math, and technology. The site includes interactive games, a computer animation demo, a comic strip, an HTML tutorial for web building, and information about mentoring, internships, and job shadowing, as well as links to related sites. Female interns age 14-19 work together with the women of Autodesk to develop and maintain the site.
Eisenhower National Clearinghouse Funded by the U.S. Department of Education and based at Ohio State University, the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse is designed to improve access to resources for K-12 mathematics and science teachers in the United States. It offers a catalog containing abstracts of lesson plans, teaching modules, interactive resources, videotapes, software, and other teaching aids. Some of these items are posted online; others are available through libraries or commercially. The clearinghouse also sponsors a discussion group for teachers and offers links to other educational servers.
Girl Geeks A site devoted to encouraging girls to develop their careers in the science departments.
Girls Explore Girls ExploreT introduces you to women explorers, such as Rachel Carson, who uncovered the dangers in pesticides; Sally Ride, the first woman in space; and Jane Goodall, the leading authority on chimpanzees.
Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona,Tucson Students for the Exploration and Development of Space, SEDS is an independent, student-based organization which promotes the exploration and development of space. SEDS pursues this mission by educating people about the benefits of space, by supporting a network of interested students, by providing an opportunity for members to develop their leadership skills, and inspiring people through our involvement in space-related projects. SEDS believes in a space-faring civilization and that focusing the enthusiasm of young people is the key to our future in space.
