Many search committees are impeded in their efforts to utilize best practices because they perceive guidelines such as ours to be thinly veiled attempts by special interest groups to enhance diversity by sacrificing either job criteria or qualified White males. For reasons ranging from the University’s Strategic Plan to acquiring federal research funding we admit that we want to see a more diverse faculty at URI, but our ultimate goal is to provide search committees with the tools they need to hire a good candidate, regardless of that person’s demographics. We take the long view toward diversity: It is a long-term investment, not a short-term fix.
