After: Final Steps to Evaluate the Search

What

Why / Research Rationale

Keep a checklist of good search practices for future reference

If the applicant pool was not as large or as diverse as you has hoped, consider if:

  • The job description could have been constructed differently.
  • If other active (vs. passive) recruitment strategies could have been used.
  • Were the position criteria consistently not met by underrepresented candidates? If so, why?
  • If a candidate was offered a position or an interview, why did s/he decline? (ADVANCE or the Affirmative Action office can help conduct a confidential interview with such candidates.)

Put simply: Because you learn from reflecting upon your successes and mistakes, research principles are founded on this simple philosophy.
