Before: Defining the Search Committee’s Charge

 Search Committee’s Charge

What

Why / Research Rationale

Make equity a conscious priority. Such a commitment produces a good hire whose qualifications match the position description.

Discuss candidate selection criteria and position description.

Brainstorm “search” practices to identify underrepresented candidates.

Conduct an active search.

Learn the rationale, context, implementation, and effects ofAffirmative Action policies.

Devise a retention plan NOW!

To avoid the shifting criteria phenomenon(Uhlmann & Cohen, 2005): A firm commitment to fairness, equity & hiring criteria can undercut a tendency to shift hiring criteria to fit a candidate from a desired (often majority) group.
