Family Leave at URI

Vision Statment

The Parental Leave Policy for AAUP faculty was adopted in January 2005. It is the result of the collaboration of several women’s groups on campus, notably the President’s Commission on the Status of Women and ADVANCE, and is fully supported by President Carothers. It is backed by a strong philosophical framework (see below) and research based general recommendations. Hallmarks of this policy include paid parental leave, and provisions for tenure clock stopage, reduced workload, and modified duties. We are proud of this policy and the hard work, support and effort that it represents. We also recognize, however, that this policy is only an initial step in creating a family friendly environment at URI. ADVANCE advocates for the adoption of similar parental leave policies for all staff and graduate students and will continue to work toward family friendly policies including those that involve dual career partners, child care, and elder care. Please contact us if you would like to be involved in these efforts.
