Tootell Aquatic Programs

 

 

Let your children learn a skill that lasts a lifetime! Our Learn-to-Swim program offers a group instructional setting for participants of all swimming levels. Ages range from infants to teens. All swim classes are taught by American Red Cross-certified instructors. Our lessons strive to create a safe and comfortable learning environment while teaching your children new swimming skills, important water safety behavior and introducing them to a great form of exercise.

Parent & Child

This class is designed for infants and toddlers to develop a comfort level in and around the water.  Instructors will teach the parent/guardian how to assist their child with swimming and provide them with information for aquatic safety.
Age Requirement: 6 months – 3 years

Preschool: Level 1

This class is designed for children who have little to no water experience or may have a fear of going underwater. Participants start developing a good attitude and safe practices around the water.  Children will work on basic swimming skills through play and incidental learning to encourage a fun and enjoyable experience.
Age Requirement: 3 – 5 years old

Preschool: Level 2

This class is for children who are comfortable submerging their faces and are ready to learn basic aquatic locomotion skills on both the front and the back with assistance.  New safety skills and review of previous knowledge from Preschool Level 1 will be covered.
Age Requirement: 3 – 5 years old

Preschool: Level 3

This class is designed for children who are very comfortable in the water and can perform basic front and back floats and swim 3 body lengths with assistance.  Increased locomotion skills will be taught at this level with the goal of the child swimming independently at least 5 body lengths. New safety skills and review of previous knowledge from Preschool Levels 1 and 2 will be covered.
Age Requirement: 3 – 5 years old

Preschool: Level 4

This class is designed for children who have mastered the skills in Preschool Level 3 and can swim independently at least 5 body lengths on their front and back.  Diving will be introduced at this level as well as the elementary backstroke and rotary breathing.
Age Requirement: 4 – 6 years old

Child & Youth Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills

This class is designed for children who have little to no water experience or may have a fear of going underwater. Participants will work on basic swimming skills with support and start developing a good attitude and safe practices around the water.
Age Requirement: 5 years old

Child & Youth Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills

This class is designed for children who are comfortable submerging their faces and are ready to learn fundamental aquatic skills on both their front and back without support.  New safety skills and review of previous knowledge from Level 1 will be covered.
Age Requirement: 5 years old

Child & Youth Level 3: Stroke Development

This class is designed for those students who have mastered the skills in Level 2.  Participants will be taught the front crawl and elementary backstroke and be able to swim at least 15 yards of both these strokes.  It will introduce diving skills and safety as well as dolphin and scissor kicks.   New safety skills and review of previous knowledge from earlier levels will be covered.
Age Requirement: 5 years old

Child & Youth Level 4: Stroke Development

This class is designed for those students who have mastered the skills in Level 3.  Participants will build confidence and endurance in strokes previously taught by swimming greater distances (at least 25 yards) and will learn 2 new headfirst entries.  This level will also introduce, and have the students swim at least 15 yards, of back crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke, and butterfly as well as complete open turns.  New safety skills and review of previous knowledge from earlier levels will be covered.
Age Requirement: 5 years old

Child & Youth Level 5: Stroke Refinement

This class is designed for those students who have mastered the skills in Level 4.  Participants will work on refining strokes learned in that level and continue to build their coordination and endurance.  This level will introduce flip turns on both the front and back.  New safety skills and review of previous knowledge from earlier levels will be covered.
Age Requirement: 5 years old

Child & Youth Level 6: Fitness Swimming

This class is designed for those students who have mastered the skills in Level 5 and who want to achieve a higher level of aquatic fitness or transition into competitive swimming.  This course is designed to refine participant’s strokes in order to increase ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances.  Students will be introduced to starting and turning techniques as well as more.
Age Requirement: 5 years old

Child & Youth Level 6: Diving

This class is designed for those students who have mastered the skills in Level 5 and who want to learn the fundamental skills of springboard diving.  Participants will also refine strokes in order to increase ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances.
Age Requirement: 5 years old

Child & Youth Level 6: Personal Water Safety

This class is designed for those students who have mastered the skills in Level 5 and who want to learn how to prevent emergencies in various aquatic environments. Participants will learn and practice self-rescue techniques as well as refine their strokes in order to increase ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances.  This class will aid in preparation for students interested in Junior Lifeguarding.
Age Requirement: 5 years old

Private Lessons

Private lessons are offered on a one-on-one basis at times that fit your schedule! Our qualified instructors make learning more enjoyable for all skill abilities from non-swimmer through advanced competitive levels. Days and times are coordinated with your personal instructor in conjunction with the Aquatic Specialist.  A Semi-Private lesson is a lesson where two participants choose to have a lesson together.  The cost of the half hour lesson includes both participants.  Some instructors are trained to work with individuals with disabilities.  For more information, please call the private swim line at 401.874.2834.
Private Fee (30 minute lesson): Member: $20 / Non-Member: $30 
Semi-Private Fee (30 minute lesson):
 Member: $25 / Non-Member: $45
Registration: Available in Tootell Room 114 or by phone at 401.874.2834 during regular business hours and must be made at least 48 hours in advance.  Registration for the Fall 2014 Semester begins Thursday, September 11th and lessons will be available from September 15th – December 8th.
Registration for the Spring 2015 Semester begins Tuesday, January 27th and lessons will run be available from January 30th – April 29th.

Membership Discounts / Benefits

As a benefit of membership, URI Students and facility members receive discounted rates on many program offerings such as: learn to swim lessons; certification classes (first-aid, CPR, AED instructional classes); locker and towel service and special events.
