Meet the Instructors



Coordinator of Fitness & Wellness


I have one of the most amazing jobs, which is working with students and exercise participants of all ages on the university campus and community.  I have a MS from Southern Connecticut State University in Human Performance, a BS from the University of Connecticut in Exercise Science and a minor in Sports Nutrition. I’m also nationally certified as a personal trainer, group exercise instructor, American Red Cross Instructor, ACE certified stretch specialist, and Nautilus training certified. I am an adjunct Professor for the Kinesiology Department as well as provide lectures on campus and to the community in the area of Exercise Sociology. I have the unique privilege to be a part of the plan, design, construction and delivery of our new fitness and wellness center a 31,000 sq ft facility, scheduled to open Fall 2013.  My personal philosophy is “If there is a will there is a way, so don’t stop trying”.

I am a graduate of URI– GO RAMS! Very exciting to be back here on campus where my fitness career began. Prior to accepting this position, I have eight years training military personal in tactical, functional and physical performance at Naval Station Newport. Three years working with high school students and coaches as well as college and adult athletes to improve their core strength, injury prevention, sports performance and overall health. My training philosophy is to build strength from the inside out to achieve sport and fitness goals at any stage of life.  ACE certified Personal Trainer, ACE Advanced Health and Fitness Specialist, TRX® Group Certified, Kettle Bell Concepts Level 1 Instructor and Insanity® Certified.

I have been a group ex instructor since classes were simply called “aerobics”, and have grown and developed as a teacher and mentor, right along with the industry.  I love learning new techniques and trends, and believe the best workout plan is a varied one.  I like to “mix it up”, am always game to try something new and different, and LOVE seeing new faces taking that leap and attending class for the first time!    As a URI graduate with an MS in education, my passion lies in helping others learn.  In addition to teaching a variety of fitness class formats, I am here to help students develop their careers as group ex instructors.  My office is located in the Wellness Resource Center (lower level of the Anna Fascitelli Fitness and Wellness Center) – please stop in and let me know what YOU think of our program!



LAURA, Team Leader:  Laura Creese

I am a junior cell and molecular biology major who loves to teach all kinds of yoga here on campus for URI students! I have taught yoga since the beginning of my freshman year and I continue to love it more and more each semester! Come flow with me in one of my classes at Anna Fascitelli (or probably anywhere else on campus as I’ve been known to teach for student senate or with my sorority!).

I’m a junior studying psychology! At URI, I will be leading spin and possibly new and fun cardio classes! I fell in love with biking as a little girl and would always go on long bike rides with my Dad. Every summer, my Dad and I take a long bike trip together. Two year ago, we got matching bike tattoos on our calves along the Erie Canal. I am so excited to be an instructor and can’t wait to interact, motivate and have fun working out together



I am an incoming Freshman, Biological Sciences and Political Science major. As a 200 Hour Certified Kripalu Yoga Instructor and an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher through the Yoga Alliance, I am delighted to bring my passion for this practice to URI. My lighthearted classes focus on anatomy and physiology of yoga, so that each practice is customized and nurturing for every body and ability.



I have been at URI in the Nutrition Department since September 2001, and teaching Group Ex classes most of that time.  I started teaching group fitness classes when I was in grad school and have not stopped because I love it so much!  I have taught in the Boston area, in a small gym in NH, and in the Netherlands.  I like a wide variety, including spin and other cardio, intervals, classes using resistance equipment, steps, and more.  I also enjoy lots of different outdoor activities, during all four seasons!

I am a junior majoring in Nutrition and Dietetics. I love exercising because it is an awesome stress reliever and such a great way to stay healthy and happy. If you are looking for a challenging, fun workout, come check out my Core strengthening classes!





I am a pharmacy major originally from New Jersey! I am teaching Zumba this semester. I have a background in all types of dance, with a focus on Bollywood. I try to bring culture and energy to my classes!




I am a senior Communication Studies major with a minor in Business. I have been teaching Yoga at URI since my freshman year! I also teach Barre, Pilates, and Foam Roll this semester. I love seeing my students take time out of their busy days to relax with me!




Hi everyone, and welcome to all! My name is Haneefah (Capoeira name: Libelinha), and I am currently studying French and Mechanical engineering in a dual degree program here at URI. I am a Group Exercise instructor, and a part of the URI capoeira club on campus, where I teach capoeira: an Afro-Brazilian martial art. I am an advanced student in the art and I love sharing it’s holistic components of music, martial arts, and dance; as well as its rich cultural roots. Come join me on this journey of movement, workout, and song all in one. Hope to see you there!




I work at U.R.I. as an ESL teacher with A.C.E. Language Institute. I am a 200-Hour RYT yoga  instructor trained at Raffa Yoga in Cranston, Rhode Island. I love teaching in the Fascitelli studio  and enjoy meeting more and more awesome people on campus. Namaste.





 I have lived, worked, danced and practiced yoga in countless cities throughout the world including  Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Dakar Senegal, Guatemala City, Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic  and Managua, Nicaragua. My technical dance background is from Adelphi University, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Skidmore College, and the University of Seville, Spain.  I am trained in devotional (Bhakti) Hatha yoga ~oriented to the discovery of grace within and All as One.






I am a kinesiology major with a concentration in physical therapy from Rhode Island. This semester I am teaching Zumba. I have always been interested in how the body functions and its capabilities of different movement. That being said, I hope to get people to drop the boring workout and join the Zumba Party!



I work as an Academic Advisor in the College of Business.  I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice. I have been teaching Group Exercise for over 20 years at various places including the YMCA, Newport Naval Base, Gold’s Gym, community groups and now at the new Fascitelli center. Fitness is my passion and I am so excited to be a party of a college community in both academics and wellness. If you don’t see me in the gym, you may see me running on campus or in a local race. I love to mix it up and keep the participants challenged. You’ll leave class happy and sweaty!!


CHRISTINE I’m a graduate student in the Harrington School of Communication and Media Studies. I have been teaching spin classes for almost two years, but a rider for much longer! I teach at a number of different gyms, but love getting to interact with students at URI. If you see me I’m almost always reading and/or eating!


VALERIANNE I am a full time academic advisor for the College of Health Sciences, and I teach Zumba, STRONG by Zumba (HIIT), and POUND. I am AFAA certified with a background in dance and fitness. I’ve been teaching for seven years throughout the state including the YMCA, River Bend Athletic Club,  Coastal Bodyworx, and Luxe Fitness. I enjoy introducing new students to these exciting formats and helping students achieve their fitness goals. When I am not working or teaching, I also perform in a Bollywood Dance troupe and run around with my four children. Come to my class! I promise you won’t be bored!

EMMA I am currently a sophomore majoring in Secondary Education and History, and I’m involved in the University marching band. I will be teaching Zumba Fitness this semester, my favorite types of music to teach in class are Reggaeton and Cumbia! I love getting to share my love of dance and music with students and can’t wait to see everyone out there!

KELSEY I’m a senior communications major (with a minor in business) who fell in love with working out when I was in high school. I started taking group exercise classes, especially Body Pump, when I was a freshman at URI and I was immediately addicted to this super fun high intensity class. I have recently become certified to instruct Body Pump and have been teaching over the summer! Come have some fun and get the best workout for your body in one of my classes! Don’t be a stranger if you see me around campus, however, if you say hi and I don’t know who you are, it’s most likely just my twin sister

Leanne TrischittaLEANNE, Team leader I am going to be a senior (P2) student in the pharmacy program working to get my doctorate. Don’t worry- I will still be here next year because pharmacy is a 6 year program! I currently teach GroupX classes that incorporate cardio, strength, and ab work. I hope to become a pharmacist while teaching GroupX classes on the side. I have always loved working out since I joined track in high school, and I have done 2 half marathons and 1 full marathon since. When I’m not working out, I love to travel, go to the beach, and spend time with my family and friends.

MCKENNA I am a junior nursing major and thanatology minor who absolutely loves spin! I fell in love with spinning when a knee injury from running forced me to explore other exercise options. I love playing a wide variety of music in my classes so that I am always mixing it up! Come to one of my spin classes and I promise you will get a great workout in and also have a blast!

SAVANNAH Hey everybody! I am a Nursing major, minoring in Thanatology. For two years I’ve been attending group exercise classes at URI and now I am so excited to be leading my own BodyPump classes! I recently got certified as a Les Mills BodyPump instructor. I want to work to inspire and push you to your limits. If you’re interested in challenging yourself and putting all your anger/stress into a good work out, come join me! I am enthused to share my passion with others.

Alexa GamaALEXA I am a senior Kinesiology major who hopes to pursue a career in physical therapy in the future.  I love to teach themed and regular spin classes.  I fell in love with spin 5 years ago and I decided to take the next step and become a spin instructor.  I wanted to follow in the path of my previous spin instructors and inspire others while also giving them an awesome workout.  Come spin with me at one of my classes this semester!


MIKAYLA Hi everyone! I am a senior kinesiology major with a minor in nutrition. I just recently became a body pump instructor and I am excited to spread my love for this class with others. I have a passion for health and fitness and anything that involves the outdoors. I am looking forward to meeting everyone in class this coming year!

SCOTT My name is Scott and I love movement. I am currently a junior year mechanical engineer, personal trainer, GroupX instructor for handstands and creative movements, behavior change specialist, leader of Make a Change Monday, and creator/President of URI Flow. Life is about cultivating awareness and self confidence of mind and body. Free expression of the self and the progressive realization of worthy ideals is a fantastic pathway to happiness and an enjoyable life. All expression is created through movement. All movement and worthy ideals are spawn in the psychic energy of the mind. Cherish your mind and body, treat them as the temples they are, watch as your perception of reality changes before your eye and listen to the symphony they create together through self expression. Get up, think, move, imagine, and create the life your heart desires.
