Rachel MacPhee

Major:  Geological Oceanography

Hometown:  Pepperell, MA

Favorite Class at URI:

I enjoyed GEO 320: Earth Materials. It was one of the first upper-level classes I took. It was a difficult class and hard work, but it was fun and I learned a lot.

Hands-on Experience:

URI Watershed Watch (water quality testing and laboratory work in water quality analysis) and Endeavor Research Cruise (studied the physics, chemistry and biology of RI’s offshore waters, scientific data collection experience).

Why URI and CELS?

I vacationed in South Kingstown a lot as a child. I love the ocean and this area. Also, the Geological Oceanography major was not offered at other schools I applied to.

Clubs & Activities:

URI Emergency Medical Services

Top 3 Favorite Things about the URI area:

  1. Beaches
  2. Great local coffee shops (Taylor’s Landing & Jitters)
  3. Beautiful campus

What should prospective students know about URI and CELS?

The geology department is great because it is small and the class sizes are small. You get to know everyone in your major well and it’s easy to form study groups.

Words of wisdom for new students:

Join a club or a sport your freshman year that somehow relates to your major. It is never too early to start building your resume and networking!
