2016 URI Eco-Exploration Camp

Hosted at the University of Rhode Island Botanical Gardens in Kingston and at the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center in Providence!

RWP garden harvesting donating foodThe URI Extension Outreach Center invites your budding scientists to engage in an outdoor adventure this summer. Our day camps encourage kids to explore the natural world, with programs conveniently located both in Kingston and Providence. Campers will investigate the geology of Rhode Island, ecology and natural history of Rhode Island plants and animals, learn citizen science, engage in hands-on S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) activities, play nature-themed games, harvest freshly-grown produce, create arts and crafts projects, write in their journals, collect treasures for nature boxes and more! Each week is themed and geared towards different age groups based on the level of content. Eco-Exploration educators are URI faculty, staff and students. Send your child for one week or more!

  • exo-exploration camp 1DATES: July 11 – 15, 2016
    TIME: 9:00 – 3:30 PM
    LOCATION: URI Botanical Gardens, 3 East Alumni Avenue, Kingston, RI
    AGES: 7 – 11

    Have you ever wondered what type of animals may be living in the garden? This week, campers will net insects, track mammals and catalog the birds and amphibians that inhabit the URI Botanical Gardens and the nearby North Woods habitat. They will investigate animal diversity by viewing birds’ nests, mammal skulls and insect specimens. Campers will have the chance to cool off at the URI pool, and will leave this week equipped to turn any backyard into a living laboratory! Please note: Lunch is not included.

    LOCATION: URI Botanical Gardens, 3 East Alumni Avenue, Kingston, RI
    AGES: 6 – 10

    Rocks are everywhere! Look at the world in a whole new way by participating in a week of discovery about rocks. Daily geology mini-lessons will be paired with guided exploration of minerals and rocks and related art projects. Campers will join Dr. Amy Cabaniss (URI Extension Outreach Center), Dr. Dawn Cardace (URI Department of Geosciences) and URI students in learning opportunities tied to the properties of minerals and the different ways that rocks form and evolve on Earth. This week includes a local field trip to see rocks in natural settings and to imagine how they got there. A visit to the URI pool is included!  Please note: Lunch is not included.

    TIME: 9:00 – 3:30 PM
    LOCATION: Roger Williams Park Botanical Center, 1 Floral Way, Providence
    AGES: 6 – 10

    This week encourages kids will take a closer look at RI’s environment, including our food system!  Where does our food come from?  How do you grow a garden?  Why do we need pollinators and how can we attract them to the garden? Campers will harvest vegetables grown in a working community garden and explore an edible forest garden. They will learn the importance of land stewardship and the processes that bring our food from farm to table. In addition to being based in the awe-inspiring Botanical Center, other RWP attractions will be visited this week. Lunch is provided by the City of Providence.

  • exo-exploration camp 3DATES: August 8-12, 2016
    TIME: 9:00 – 3:30 PM
    LOCATION: Roger Williams Park Botanical Center, 1 Floral Way, Providence
    AGES: 7 – 11

    Investigating the world through multiple lenses, campers will explore the Botanical Center, investigate nature’s biological diversity, learn about structure and function in nature and the built world, create works of art, harvest vegetables grown in a working community garden, investigate water quality, learn about energy, take a hike and visit other RWP attractions, understand what it means to be an environmental steward, and more!  This week of camp taps into science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM)!  Lunch is provided by the City of Providence.

Registration**: URI Eco-Exploration Camp registration begins on March 18, 2016 and continues until each camp week is filled. Early registration is encouraged to ensure camp enrollment.
