Living & Learning Community

The URI Chinese Language Flagship Program offers two Chinese Living and Learning Communities (LLCs):  One for First Year Flagship students and another for upperclassmen.

What is a Living and Learning Community?

A Living and Learning Community (LLC) is an entire residence hall, or a sector within a residence hall, that is assigned by academic college, major, or interest area. For more information on LLCs at URI, visit Housing & Residential Life.

First Year Chinese LLC:

The First Year Chinese LLC offers a dynamic, intercultural experience where First Year Flagship Students live and engage with international students from China. It is located in Hillside residence hall and offers programs that reflect the interests of the community members. An on-site Resident Academic Mentor (RAM) and Resident Advisor (RA) provide academic and social support to students through study sessions, professional activities, and cultural events.

The Chinese LLC RAM and programs provide support for all freshmen Flagship students, regardless of whether you live in another dorm or commute to campus. We encourage you to participate regularly and take advantage of the various resources, programs, and integrated support network that will help you succeed as a URI Flagship student.

Programming offered in the First Year Chinese LLC includes:

  • Flagship Orientation and Linguistic Preparation (week prior to regularly-scheduled move-in for First Year Flagship Students
  • Welcome Luncheon for all Flagship Students
  • Chinese Tutoring
  • Flagship Career Path Panel
  • Meet the Deans and Faculty Forum
  • Chinese Cultural Events: Movie Nights, Lectures, Cooking, etc.

Chinese LLC for Upperclassmen:

The Chinese LLC for Upperclassmen is a wing in the Heidi Kirk Duffy Center for International Engineering Education on Upper College Road.  Residents share a common interest in the Chinese language and culture.  Most are Chinese Flagship Scholars, but exchange students from China live and serve as tutors there also. Chinese Flagship Scholars can apply to live in the Chinese LLC for Upperclassmen after their freshman year.  Priority is given to Flagship Scholars who are also in the International Engineering Program (IEP).  Applications and more information are available on the Heidi Kirk Duffy Center Page.
