Rugby is a club sport at URI, which means that all are welcome; prior rugby experience, while helpful, is certainly not required. We have players from every type of athletic background- football, hockey, track, wrestling- and more are welcome. Many of the current players began playing at URI with no experience whatsoever. Every player is given the opportunity to learn the game and coaching by the staff. We attempt to get every player some playing time in games at an appropriate level. The club plays games generally on Saturdays from September to early November in the fall and mid-March through April in the spring.
Very little is required in terms of gear to play rugby – at least one training jersey, shorts and socks, approved cleats (most soccer cleats are acceptable) and a mouth guard.
There are 3 requirements to play Men’s rugby at URI:
- Registration with Club Sports – registration may be done on-line at http://web.uri.edu/clubsports/ and includes providing personal and family contact information (in case of emergency), agreement with Student Code of Conduct, and the Waiver of Responsibility, which must be printed, signed, and turned in to Club Sports before participating.
- Pay the Club Dues –At least ½ of the dues – currently established at $150 per season (we play both fall and spring and there is a separate assessment for each season) – must be paid before the first conference game, and the full amount by the end of September. Any partial payments must be negotiated directly with the Director of Club Sports. Payment may be made to the club Treasurer or directly at the Club Sports office. If making payment at Club Sports, be sure to retain the pink receipt and show it to the treasurer to be certain that your payment is properly credited.
- Attend practice – Nothing contributes more to your success as a rugby player than your attendance and work habits at practice. We have a great many players, and a good work ethic at practice is essential to your development as a player. Practices are held on the club’s dedicated fields behind the Beck Baseball complex Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 4:30pm-6:30pm. Players are expected to arrive at least 15 minutes early to allow time to practice individual skills prior to team practice. We practice rain or shine, so players should be prepared and bring appropriate attire and supplies, including a sturdy training jersey and shorts, cleats (no toe cleats) and at least 1, and preferably 2, fitted mouth guards. Players are expected to make as many practices as possible. If classes or academic activities prevent a player from attending practice, the coaching staff is to be notified in advance whenever possible. In addition, anyone playing in a 1st side conference match must be registered with USA Rugby (https://usarugby.org/membership). Registration with USA Rugby offers liability and accident insurance. Liability Insurance covers accident and bodily injury to third parties and enables members (us) to use facilities that require third party liability insurance coverage. The Accident Insurance covers rugby-related accidents for registered members at practices, matches and tournaments where participants are registered. The insurance provides secondary coverage, but can serve as primary coverage in the absence of other medical coverage.
