URI Internship Program Information

Academic Requirements

  • 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher
  • Minimum 60 credits prior to internship
  • 300+ level free elective credits available (meet with academic advisor to determine)
  • Good academic and social standing

General Information

  • Internships are offered in the fall, spring and summer
  • Internships are available in virtually every field
  • Students may intern anywhere in the U.S.
  • Students can choose an internship from the RhodyNet database
  • Students can also create their own internship with the department’s guidance
  • Over 600 placement sites are available in Rhode Island

Credits & Hours

The internship program consists of two components: the 3-12 credit field experience and the required 3-credit internship seminar. Grading: students receive a satisfactory or unsatisfactory (S/U) grade for the field experience and a letter grade (A – F) for the seminar. Each student participating in an internship completes approximately 35 hours per credit.


  • 13 weeks
  • 3 Credits = 104 hrs total
  • 6 Credits = 210 hrs total
  • 9 Credits = 315 hrs total
  • 12 Credits = 420 hrs total


  • 10 Weeks
  • 3 Credits = 100 hrs total
  • 6 Credits = 200 hrs total
  • 9 Credits = 300 hrs total
  • 12 Credits = 400 hrs total

Internship Seminar

Students will enroll in a 3-credit seminar taken concurrently with their field experience. The Internship Seminar focuses on the intern’s learning experience, professional and career development, and preparation for graduate studies. Some of the topics covered in seminar:

  • 5 Stages of the Internship
  • Communication in the workplace
  • Cover letter and resume writing workshops
  • Professional portfolio development
  • Informational Interview: Analyzing, researching, and reflecting on a future career or graduate studies
