How to request a deferral of enrollment

All deferral requests must be submitted prior to the first day of classes for the original semester of enrollment (i.e., if the student was admitted for fall semester, the deferral request must be submitted prior to the start of fall classes).  Please note, only one deferment request will be granted.
To request a deferral, please email the department to which you have been admitted:

Please include the following information:
In the email subject line type: “Graduate Program Deferral Request”
In the email text type:

Your Name
URI ID (this can be found in your acceptance email).
Current email address
New term you wish to begin in

Once the department has sent an email to Lisa Furlong ( at the Graduate School approving this request, you will receive an email from the Graduate School confirming the deferment.

Please note, a deferment is not the same as a Leave of Absence.  Please contact Linda Conte (, Lori Anderson (, at the Graduate School for more information about a Leave of Absence.
