Tuition Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to full-time graduate students currently enrolled in thesis or non-thesis master’s programs or professional doctoral programs (excludes certificate, PharmD and PhD programs). Candidates are either nominated by their faculty, department/program or may be self-nominated; recipients must be in good academic standing. Domestic and international students in on-campus and online programs are eligible.

Tuition Scholarship recipients cannot hold any additional URI fellowship, or assistantship during the same academic year, but may work on campus for hourly pay.

Scholarship Timeline

  • December 13: Call for nominations
  • January 12: Nominations due
  • Early February: Scholarship winners announced

Graduate School scholarships cover individual tuition and graduate standard student fees (registration fee, health services fee, technology fee, student services fee) for the fall and spring semesters. These scholarships do not cover health and dental insurance.

For further information about other scholarships, students should contact their major professors, graduate directors or department chairs.

Eligibility and Terms

Graduate School Tuition Scholarship recipients must be current URI masters (thesis or non-thesis) or professional doctoral (excludes certificate, PharmD and PhD programs) full-time students (taking 9-15 credits per semester, three credits per semester for students with ABD status, or up to six credits per session for up to four consecutive sessions for students in accelerated online programs). The scholarship is for the nine months of the traditional fall and spring semesters.

Recipients cannot hold any additional URI fellowship, assistantship, or scholarship during the same academic year, but may work on campus for hourly pay.

Nomination Submission Instructions

Submission may be made by department/program, faculty or self-nominations by students.

The nominations will be submitted via InfoReady and will include the following elements:

  • Two letters of recommendation and supporting information. Letters may be written by any combination of the following sources: department chair, director of graduate studies, student’s major advisor, or other faculty.
  • Statement of Professional Objectives (maximum of 500 words). This statement should describe the nominee’s aspirations, challenges in achieving those goals, and how their record of excellence at URI will equip them for success.
  • Curriculum vitae (maximum of two pages)
  • Unofficial transcript (downloaded from e-Campus)

The Tuition Scholarship Competition is currently closed, will reopen December  2024.

Selection Criteria

Nominees are evaluated based on their academic progress and their merits. The criteria used by the committee to make their selections are as follows:

  • Letters of recommendation 
  • Statement of professional objective
  • Other evidence of achievement

Announcement of Awardees

Awards will be announced in early February via email to the recipients with copies sent to their respective department chairs. The initial notice of intention to award a scholarship for the Fall 2024 semester will specify that it is contingent upon the availability of budgetary resources and the recipient’s satisfactory completion of the current academic term.
