South County Habitat for Humanity to receive $14,488 from 2011 URI fundraising efforts

URI Community Members to Present Check to Local Non-Profit Organization at Rhody Basketball

KINGSTON, R.I. – Jan. 30, 2012 – The University of Rhode Island community will celebrate a year of philanthropic work and present a check in the amount of $14,488 to South County Habitat for Humanity. URI students, faculty, and staff will come together to support South County Habitat for Humanity’s efforts in building four homes on Old North Road adjacent to URI’s Kingston campus. The check presentation will take place during the URI vs. Temple Men’s Basketball game on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 at 2:00pm held in the Thomas M. Ryan Center (1 Lincoln Almond Plaza, Kingston, R.I. 02881).

The funds donated were raised throughout 2011 from a combined community effort. Events such as the April 2011 Pound the Pavement, Pound a Nail walk raised $9,563. The October 2011 Homecoming campaign raised $3,425, a combined fundraising effort that included clubs and organizations such as Women’s Volleyball, Men’s Football, Greek Life, and the student chapter of Habitat for Humanity. The December 2011 URI/South County Habitat for Humanity’s Gingerbread House competition also raised an additional $1,500. Accepting the donation of behalf of S.C. Habitat will be Development and Marketing Manager, Kate Porter. Student organizations intend to continue these efforts by hosting, volunteering at, and running future campaigns in 2012.
