Congratulations to the URI/Habitat Partnership on receiving the Martin Luther King, Jr Peacemakers Award from the URI Chaplains Association for its work building homes, building hope and our best wishes for continued success as you finish the neighborhood!
For over 20 years, South County Habitat has partnered with URI to address the need in our area for affordable housing, but in 2009, an expanded campus wide partnership was launched to complete a 4 house development on Old North Road near the Emporium. By the end of 2012, URI students, faculty and administration raised $107,657 for the Old North Neighborhood and volunteered 3,050 hours on the site, celebrating the occupancy of the first home by the Stone Family in September 2012 and anticipating the dedication of the second home this summer, as well as providing the funds to build homes in Haiti and Chile.
The URI Building Homes Partnership Committee organized fundraising and coordinated volunteers that included student athletes, 14 fraternities, 10 sororities, CSV 303 and URI 101 students, joining our URI Student Habitat Chapter. These and others made major contributions: URI Cares, 200 attendees from the faculty and administration at a community breakfast, letter-writing campaigns, zumba-thons, Philanthropy Week, the Women’s Rowing, Track and Volleyball teams, the annual Pound the Pavement, Pound a Nail Walk, Rhodyville at Homecoming, electronic recycling at a home Football game and the Holiday Gingerbread House contest. All of these, along with individual pledges and donations, achieved this amazing community service effort. 2013 begins with the launching of the “Finish the Neighborhood” initiative to raise the additional $111,000 needed to complete the last two houses: the Home for a Hero Veteran’s Build and the Women’s Build.
