Schedule a confidential appointment at your convenience. No need to call health services or talk with a provider. Results will be available through your patient portal.

Health Services now has three options for STI testing.  Please review the following options to determine which appointment you should make. 

What confidential tests are available at URI Health Services?

There is no single test for all STIs and testing is based on your sexual risk assessment.

All sexually active young adults should be tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia at least once a year. More frequent testing may be recommended or desired.

• It can take up to 2 weeks after exposure for tests to accurately detect chlamydia and gonorrhea. If your last sexual contact was recent, please wait 14 days before testing or call us if you have concerns.
• If your test result is positive, you may need to schedule an appointment with a clinician to receive treatment.
• Wait at least 4 weeks after completing treatment for chlamydia or gonorrhea before you are re-tested. Testing too soon may give in a false-positive result.

Additional confidential testing can be done for:

• Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
• Syphilis
• Hepatitis B
• Hepatitis C
• Trichomoniasis

Cost for STI Testing

• STI test results are always confidential.
• STI testing is often covered by insurance, although each insurance plan varies. We recommend you call the number on the back of your insurance card to confidentially inquire about your coverage and billing processes. You can always check with our billing department if you have specific questions on your coverage.
• You can opt to pay out-of-pocket for STI testing and no insurance will be involved. Costs:
  • Gonorrhea/Chlamydia: $37
  • Gonorrhea: $19
  • Chlamydia: $18
  • HIV: $20
  • Syphilis: $10

• If you are still not sure how you’d like to proceed with STI screening, we encourage you to call 401-874-2246 for an appointment to talk with a provider.

Important Notice 

If you have symptoms, or if you (or someone you know) has been the victim of an assault, you should NOT use the online STI screening option as other testing or treatment may be needed, and other campus resources are available to assist you. Please call Health Services at 401-874-2246 to speak with a nurse. 

For victims of sexual assault, the Violence Prevention and Advocacy Services (VPAS) at URI is committed to creating and maintaining a campus environment free from all forms of sexual violence, sexual harassment, relationship violence, and stalking. Call 401-874-2246 to speak with a nurse if you have any concerns.  

Depending on what tests are performed, testing procedures may involve collecting a urine sample; throat, cervical, vaginal or rectal swab; and/or blood work. Do not urinate at least 2 hours prior to your appointment.

Do not schedule an appointment too soon after a concerning encounter. It is best to wait at least 2 weeks after possible exposure for most test results to be accurate.

How do I get my results

Depending on what tests are performed, it typically takes a few days (but could take up to a week) after your appointment to get test results.

Typically, you will receive test results through a secure message through your health portal. A provider may also call you to discuss your test results over the phone. If any test is positive, a provider will call you on the phone.

Results from the Free HIV and Hepatitis C testing through Health Promotion are given in-person at the time of testing.
