Polling

Polling

Primarily, URI faculty are using TurningPoint Cloud or Top Hat for classroom polling.  TurningPoint Cloud has both a clicker device available and/or a software application option.  Top Hat offers just the software application.

Both  Turning Point Cloud and Top Hat  software applications work on a wide variety of smartphones, tablets and laptops. Both companies currently offer rebates to students and the student can use the clicker or the software in multiple classes without extra charge.

Rebate sites:

The topics below open when clicked on. Each will reveal links to resource documents or videos to help you with that particular topic.

Faculty: Turning Point Cloud (TPC)

  • Turning Technologies will send you an instructor kit for new faculty once you fill out and submit the form on their website:

    Turning Technologies Instructor Kit

  • You may do these in a different order, depending on when you start the process or your own specific approach to setting up your class.

    1. Notify the Bookstore
When you put in your book order with the University Bookstore, (Paul Whitney, (401) 874-5224), tell them that your class will use TurningPoint Cloud or add the clicker info in the Comment section of the Bookstore online form.

    2. Find Your Turning Point Cloud Channel
When you have been assigned a classroom, locate the TurningPoint Cloud Channel for your room — Kingston-TurningPoint Cloud Channel Room Assignments.  Please add the room channel to your syllabus.

In each classroom, there is a posted sign that lists the channel for the room as well.  This sign also has a QR code  that links to the URI techwiki for more information about the room.

    3. Add TurningPoint Cloud to your syllabus:

    • The assigned TurningPoint Room Channel. (See #2 above)
    • The URL for this page so that your students can learn how create an account, purchase or redeem an account license code, and add their Device ID to your Sakai course.

    4. Prepare for the first day of class
Read the Getting Started with TurningPoint Cloud First Day of Class Materials

Turning Technologies recommends that you download the ‘First Day Slides’ for classes using clickers  and use them as part of your first-class presentation.

    5. Get your computer software ready
If you have not  created your secure account at Turning Technologies, please be sure to do this:

If you previously created an account for ResponseWare at this site – continue to use that account.

    6. Log into your Turning Account
When you are at the Turning Technologies website, download the appropriate version of the TurningPoint Cloud software:

    • Windows: To install the software on your laptop use the INSTALL version
    • Windows: To install the software on a USB drive, use the NO INSTALL version
    • Macintosh: To install the software on either a USB drive or your laptop use the INSTALL version.

To avoid confusion, if you previously used TurningPoint 5, remember to uninstall it on your laptops and remove aliases from your desktop or dock before you download TurningPoint Cloud.

    7. Get your Sakai course site ready for Sakai 10 (Fall 2016)

Using the Site Info tool->Edit Tools option, add the ‘TurningPoint Cloud’ tool.

Review  Sakai and TurningPoint Cloud (pdf). This document covers downloading and using a downloaded participant list, updating a participant list, exporting a session to Sakai– all with information specific to URI.

  • TurningPoint Cloud Support Staff

In October and November 2016, the TurningPoint interns Ben and Jason are available for drop-in Office Hours in Chafee 217 :
    • Thursdays 3:45 to 4:45 pm*
    • Fridays 10-11 am*

    *Except for holidays and weekends

TurningPoint Cloud Training Tutorials include both written documentation and instructor-led online sessions.

NOTE: Please be advised that URI has been upgrading the wireless access points throughout the campus in FY 2016, but there still may be some problem classrooms with insufficient wireless coverage to support ResponseWare use.

Classroom Media Assistance has TPC receivers that you can borrow if you forget or lose yours.  They can be checked out from the CMA center located on the bottom floor of the Kingston Library in LL4. Faculty can also sign out receivers for Teaching Assistants for an entire semester.

If you would like to use ResponseWare in your classroom please contact Classroom Media Assistance and a staff member will get back to you whether the room is ready or can be made ready in time, or if you need to restrict use to the RF clicker devices in that space.

    1. Which student response card is supported by the University of Rhode Island?

The University of Rhode Island Council of Deans has supported Turning Technologies as the primary provider for student response systems since 2009.

    2. What is Turning Point Cloud?

TurningPoint Cloud combines class polling with PowerPoint (or other presentation programs), allowing the instructor to conduct self-paced tests, evaluations, and surveys. The instructor can conduct real-time assessments to track progress and instantly view results and collect valuable data all from within the TurningPoint Cloud application.

However, instructors and students are required to have a free Turning Account. This account provides a unique identifier for each student.   As part of their account, students are required to purchase a Turning Account license and either a response device  or a mobile device.

    3. What do I need to use TurningPoint Cloud in the classroom?

Instructors will need to follow the 7 Steps to Success that are included in a separate section above.

New Instructors will need to also fill out and submit the online form to receive your instructor kit. A link to this form is included in the Faculty: Getting Started topic above.

    4. My students are asking about ResponseWare. What is it?

TurningPoint Cloud is a polling application that can be used with or without clickers. TurningPoint Cloud can be used in all of the General Assignment Classrooms in Kingston as Responseware can run on URI’s wireless system.  If you have a problem in a particular classroom, please report it to the Help Desk  (874-4357).

When purchasing a QT clicker, students also get a license in the box for ResponseWare software for their iOS or Android device or laptop with a Wi-Fi connection. (Check the Turning Technologies website for supported devices.)

If you plan to use ResponseWare, please read this ResponseWare User Guide for Presenters (faculty).

    5. What are the student options for Turning Point Cloud?

New students have 2 options from the Student Store in the left menu of their Turning Account:

    1. Students can purchase a clicker device from the URI Bookstore with a 4-year ResponseWare license/TP cloud account. For Fall 2016, there is a $20.99 rebate.
    2.  Students can purchase a  one or four-year ResponseWare license to use on a mobile device.  However,  instructors must make the decision whether to allow mobile devices and communicate that decision to the students.

Current Students who own an older clicker model may keep the old clicker but must purchase a one, two, or four-year license at the URI Bookstore or online.

All previous versions of student clicker will function with TurningPoint Cloud program as long as they support the functions their instructor plans to use in the classroom.

6.What does standardizing on the QT clicker model mean to me?

URI has  transitioned to the Turning Technologies QT clicker model.

    • The most obvious difference from the NXT clicker is that the QT includes a full QWERTY keyboard. More features are listed online at Turning Technologies website. (This page will open in a new tab, click on QT device).
    • Faculty may continue to use the same white or white & black USB receivers. What if I still have a big grey receiver?
    • If Faculty plan to incorporate short answer questions, they need to indicate that the NXT or QT clicker is required in their syllabus and alert the URI Bookstore.
    • The RF-03 and earlier Turning Technologies clickers will still work fine unless a student takes a class that will require using short answers.   This is why we require that any faculty planning to ask for short answers include a statement about the appropriate (NXT or QT) model for their class in the syllabus.
    • The QT costs the same as the NXT did last year and a ResponseWare license (computer software or SmartPhone app) comes bundled with it.

    7. What should I tell my students in the syllabus about using clickers?

We recommend that you cover the following points in your course syllabus:

    • Required Course Material (Attendance, Quizzes, Grading)
    • Where to Purchase Clicker or ResponseWare license
    • Registering a Clicker and Clicker Expectations in the Classroom
    • Clicker Policies in the Classroom
    • Clicker Support
    • Technical Issues in the Classroom

Possible syllabus statement: TurningPoint Cloud is the URI campus standard for student response systems. As part of this class, I require students to purchase a TurningPoint clicker (or Responseware Account). This clicker will enable in-class polling, taking attendance, getting feedback during the class, and testing. You have some options:

    a. You may purchase a Turning Technologies Response Card from the URI Bookstore.

    b. You may purchase a Turning Technologies Response Card online directly from Turning Technologies at http://store.turningtechnologies.com, when prompted, the URI code is 4URI.

    c. If you purchase a new QT clicker and four-year license, you will also receive a license for ResponseWare software.  ResponseWare is compatible with any internet browser on computers, iOS and Android devices. There is also a rebate available for purchasing the QT clicker and the four-year license.

If you already have a clicker, you may purchase the ResponseWare license from http://store.turningtechnologies.com, and when prompted, the URI code is 4URI. You may select licenses that last different lengths of time.

If a participant/student does not purchase a Turning Account license, his or her score will show as an asterisk “*” in all TurningPoint Cloud participant reports. Furthermore, his or her score will export as “0” to an Excel workbook and will not be exported to Sakai. In other words, students cannot receive grades until they purchase and activate a license.

  • From Turning Technologies:

    Dear Valued Client,

With the upcoming release of Mac OS Sierra, we want to make you aware that some third-party software applications for Mac may experience short-term issues until future updates can be released. Along these lines, our development teams are preparing an update to TurningPoint Cloud Mac that will work seamlessly with the latest version of Apple’s OS. However, our future release of TurningPoint Cloud Mac is dependent upon the release of Sierra and cannot be finalized until the new OS is available.

We anticipate the TurningPoint Cloud Mac update will be available within 60 days of the OS release. In the meantime, to ensure proper TurningPoint Cloud functionality, we strongly recommend that Mac users wait to update their OS until our update to TurningPoint Cloud Mac is available.

Please contact Turning Technologies’ support team for any additional information at866-746-3015.

    Sincerely,

    Turning Technologies

Student: Turning Point Cloud

    1. Check each class Syllabus to determine whether you need a clicker device or if you can use the ResponseWare application such as TurningPoint Cloud.
    2. When creating your TurningPoint Cloud account, be sure to use your URI eMail!
    3. Read the Buying Guide below. This includes important rebate info.
    4. If your class requires an actual clicker, purchase your device using the information in the section below, then create your Turning Account.
    5. If your class is using only the mobile device application, purchase a license from Turning Technologies. You must create or log into an account to access the student store in the left menu of the Turning Technologies page.
    6. Register your device or license in Sakai. Learn how by watching this short video or read the section below. NOTE: Where the video says to click on register, click on the TurningPoint Cloud tool.
    7. Start using TPC in the classroom!

Note: To reduce the cost of the clicker system, use the 2016 TurningPoint Cloud Rebate offer!

  • The link below lists Radio Frequency (RF) Channels assigned for use in each of the general assignment classrooms on the Kingston campus. The room channel is also posted in each room, on a sign near the light switch at the main door. It will often be listed in each course Syllabus that will use TurningPoint Cloud.

    Kingston Campus Classroom Frequency Assignments

Remember to bring your clicker device to every class, and to set your clicker to the correct channel in each classroom so the instructor’s computer RF receiver will be able to read your responses.

Changing the channel is easy, try it before you go to class so you will be comfortable setting the channel quickly.

  • Students may purchase a TurningTechnologies clicker device at the URI Bookstore or at the Turning Technologies student store. The store appears in the left menu once you have logged into your TPC account.

The URI standard device is the QT model. If you already own an older model, check each course syllabus or ask your professor if the type of questions they will ask will require the QT model.

NOTE: For most new students, the least expensive plan is to purchase the current QT model with a four-year license, to cover your undergraduate years, then pass it along to someone who can use it next. If you turn it in each May and purchase a new device each September you will spend more money.

  • Turning Technologies offers ResponseWare, which allows you to poll with your iPhone, iPodTouch, Smartphone or laptop.

    1. Download the Turning Technologies ResponseWare application to your device.
    2. If a ResponseWare license activation code did not come bundled with your clicker, you must purchase a ResponseWare license from the Student Store inside your Turning Account. The code for URI is 4URI.
    3. Finally, make sure your ResponseWare license shows up in the device list on your Turning Account.
