IT Review – Assessment and Strategic Plan

In response to the Administrative Management Review Committee (AMRC) IT Sub-Committee priority recommendation, the University engaged BerryDunn, an independent management and information technology (IT) consulting firm experienced with higher education, to develop an enterprise-wide IT Strategic Plan. The goal is to improve the delivery and scope of information technology services across URI, while building an IT structure reflecting strong centralized (ITS) as well as decentralized IT support for delivering teaching, learning, research, outreach and administrative services.

Phase One of two project phases began in late September. Phase One is an assessment of URI’s overall IT operations, services, resources, and organizational structure. Phase Two will build upon this assessment to develop an actionable University-wide IT Strategic Plan and work with the new Strategic Governance Committee to establish IT strategic priorities for the University.

Between October and December, BerryDunn conducted on-site interviews with over 200 University faculty, researchers, students and staff. Interviews were conducted in-person during 31 separate meetings in one week. At the same time, the entire campus community was engaged through an online survey sent to over 18,000 students, faculty, researchers and staff. Additional detailed data collection and analysis, with many follow-up interviews were also conducted, all toward the goal of producing an assessment of IT efforts throughout the University.

The Assessment report is expected to be released this month. At that time, BerryDunn begins work with University faculty, researchers, staff, and students on a sustainable University IT Strategic Plan. This plan will be focused on not just addressing recommendations from the Assessment report but, most importantly, facilitating the realization of campus, divisional, and departmental IT goals related to teaching and learning, research, outreach, and University administration.
