Windows XP and Server 2003 Security Risks

newsletter windowsxp iconThere are still nearly 200 Windows XP personal computers at URI. Microsoft’s Windows XP (including all Service Packs) and Microsoft Server 2003 are no longer supported by Microsoft. This means there are no longer patches or security updates for this software creating a significant security risk to URI.

It is important that faculty and staff determine if they are still using either Windows XP or Server 2003 systems. All of these systems must be upgraded or replaced to supported products such as Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10 and Windows server 2008 or 2012 as soon as possible. These systems will be blocked from accessing the Internet after the current academic year (June 2016). Anyone with questions of whether they have Windows XP or Server 2003 systems should contact the ITS Help Desk at 874-HELP (4357).
