Biochemistry Lab, Tissue Preparation Lab and Light Microscopy Lab

These three laboratories are used for a variety of basic physiological and anatomical measurements.  The Biochemistry Lab is used to collect, process and analyze blood samples to measure hormones, metabolites, and other blood markers related to health and exercise while the Tissue Preparation and Light Microscopy labs are used to image collected human tissue samples to determine the impact of exercise on the cellular and tissue levels.

The lab equipment in these 3 labs include:

Blood processing equipment:  Various pieces of equipment are used to process collected blood samples such as various size centrifuges, tissue incubator & water bath, various scales chemicals and reagents, a vented Hood station, and a -80° storage freezer.

Blood / Tissue analysis equipment:  Various analysis equipment is available such as a spectrophotometer, HemoCue Hemoglobin Analyzer, Hemocrit Analyzer, Lactate Analyzer, pH meter, slide preparation equipment and light microscopes.

Additional analysis equipment is available to students for specific research projects via collaborations with URI’s pharmacy, Nutrition, Biology and Chemistry departments.
