Master of Music in Music Education

The URI Department of Music offers its Master of Music degree with two specializations—music education or music performance. URI Graduate students are expected to complete their coursework and research within five years of beginning their master’s degree studies. The Master of Music degree may be earned through part-time study, full-time study or a combination of both.

 

Options

Performance/Essay

The minimum requirements include:

  • the successful completion of 30 credits including 6 credits in performance and 3 credits in MUS 570
  • the performance of a 45-minute recital
  • the passing of a written, comprehensive examination
  • the submission of an acceptable essay

Conducting

The minimum requirements include:

  • the successful completion of 30 credits including 6 conducting credits in choral and instrumental conducting
  • the presentation of a 45-minute conducting recital
  • the passing of a written comprehensive examination.

Composition

The minimum requirements for the composition (studio/classical) option include:

  • the successful completion of 30 credits including 6 applied composition credits in studio and/or classical composition
  • the presentation of a 45 minute composition recital
  • the passing of a written comprehensive examination
  • Recommended study for a studio composition option includes jazz arranging and composition, small and large jazz or studio ensembles, plus experiential learning in the jazz/studio area (e.g., professional recording studio experience).

Thesis

The minimum requirements for the thesis option inlcudes:

  • the successful completion of 30 credits including 6 research credits
  • the passing of a written qualifying examination toward the end of the coursework
  • the submission of an acceptable thesis and the passing of an oral examination in defense of the thesis
