Matthew Blackmar is a music historian specializing in the sociology and politics of musical meaning and listening via technologies of massmediated musical reproduction, literacy, cultural transfer, and commerce over the course of the “long” twentieth century. He received master’s degrees in musicology from Harvard University and California State University, Long Beach, following undergraduate study in music history and piano in the Joint Music Program of the Claremont Colleges. Prior to graduate study, he worked as a performing musician in Hollywood, contributing keyboards, programming, and string arrangements to an eclectic assortment of rock, pop, hiphop and heavymetal recordings.
