RONALD LEE came to the University of Rhode Island as Chair of the Department of Music and Professor of Music in 1992. Prior to this, he held several positions at Wagner College (Staten Island, NYC) from 1985 to 1992, including Chairperson of the Department of Music, Director of Lifelong Learning, and Director of the Office of Faculty Development and Corporate and Foundation Relations. At Syracuse University from 1970 to 1985, he served as Chairperson of the Division of Music Education and Music Industry and Coordinator of Arts Education.
Dr. Lee is very active in the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), the agency that accredits the top music departments and schools in the United States. For NASM, he has served as an instructional development consultant, Vice-Chairperson and Chairperson of the Northeast Region, a member of the NASM Board of Directors, a member of the Nominations Committee, and a national accreditation evaluator and team chair. Recently, he evaluated music units at universities in California, Maine, West Virginia, and Tennessee. He has headed accreditation teams for universities in Pennsylvania, North Dakota, New York, and Ohio.
While Chair of the Northeast Region, he coordinated three research studies and presented the findings at NASM annual meetings: “The Status and Future of the B.A. Degree in Music,” “Evaluation of Full-Time Music Faculty,” and “Recruitment and Admissions Practices in Music.” At the annual meeting in 2007 in Salt Lake City, he and URI lecturer Susan Thomas gave a major presentation to the membership on the topic of digital and paper portfolios of music majors. In 2009 he was invited to present a paper on the undergraduate music education curriculum. Both of these presentations have been published in the Proceedings of the National Association of Schools of Music.
