(Level I – 2015)
I am a recent graduate from the University of Rhode Island studying Pharmaceutical and Biological Sciences. I am pursuing a nursing degree at Duke University to become a practitioner specializing in internal medicine. I conducted research in Northern Uganda investigating the cultural tolerance to sexual and gender based violence in communities recovering from chronic conflict. I interviewed former child soldiers, young mothers, and South Sudanese refugees to investigate the origins of this tolerance. I learned from this experience that I had a great deal to learn about social justice. To pursue my curiosity I joined the Center for Nonviolence & Peace Studies on their annual Nonviolence Alternative Spring Break trip to Nepal. I am attending this International Nonviolence Summer Institute to continue learning about social justice, and to activity pursue social change.
