URI celebrated its 9th Peace Day on the Quad on September 21, 2017, on International Day of Peace. This day is recognized by the United Nations as one that that all countries pledge to be peaceful, including cease fires. The Center for Nonviolence & Peace Studies was joined in sponsorship this year by Violence Prevention & Advocacy Services, the Women’s Center, and Public Safety Department.
Thousands of students dropped by to create and hang a peace flag, get a “Hug for Peace,” and to form the Human Peace Sign. This year we were honored to have the 7 Tibetan monks, who are on campus all week constructing a Compassion Mandala in the Union, chant prayers for world peace, then join us in the annual Human Peace Sign with aerial photo. The day ended in a lovely and poignant Candlelight Vigil for victims of violence.
