Extension Programs in the NRS Department
URI-NRS Extension programs offer practical training, computerized mapping and innovative technologies to tailor scientific advances to the specific needs of Rhode Islanders. We strive to educate, empower, and engage residents, communities, land trusts, watershed groups and agricultural producers throughout Rhode Island and beyond to steward their local natural resources.
Geospatial Extension Program
Offers training opportunities in the use of Geographic Information System software. Specializes in the management and distribution of geospatial data on behalf of RIGIS. GPS equipment loans are available to non-profit organizations.
Forestry and Wildlife Habitat
Developing training materials and outreach events on forest management and wildlife conservation for private landowners and land trusts.
New England Onsite Wastewater Training Program (NE OWTP)
A demonstration and field training center for conventional and alternative septic system technologies.
RI Nonpoint Education for Municipal Officials (NEMO)
Supporting local decision makers in the management of land use impacts on natural resources.
Residential pollution prevention programs including drinking water protection, landscaping for water resource protection and reducing pollution risks around the home.
URI Watershed Watch
A scientist-led volunteer water quality monitoring program.
