NUWCThe College of Engineering offers student internships at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, RI. Earning while learning provides both educational and financial opportunities.

The University of Rhode Island has been contracted, through the URI/NUWC Student Services Program, to recruit and hire students attending any college or university across the United States to provide technical and analytical support to engineers and scientists at both research and development laboratories at NUWC. Hands-on training and learning offer a unique experience to undergraduate and graduate students.

Internship Student Salaries (2013-2014)

  • Graduate Students: $18.70
  • Senior (97-128 Credits): $14.86
  • Juniors (65-96 Credits): $14.24
  • Sophomores (31-64 Credits): $13.58
  • Freshmen (0-30 Credits): $10.73

Hours: You may work up to 20 hours per week during the school semester and 40 hours per week during the summer and school breaks. “Overtime” is not allowed.

Positions  are available in the fields of engineering, computer science, mathematics and physics for students attending any college or university.

There is no housing provided.

Criteria for Employment

  • Full-time student
  • Must have completed at least one semester of college and be enrolled in a second semester
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above
  • United States Citizen

  • Applications are reviewed year-round on a revolving basis.

Applying for a Position

To apply for an internship, you will need to first gather the following*:

  • Cover Letter – Addressed to the NUWC Contract Coordinator, Sally Marinelli.  Be sure to include time available for work: i.e., “summers only” or “part-time during the academic school year.”
  • Current Resume – Include such information as expected month and year of graduation, academic field of concentration with specific areas of interest, home and school addresses, phone number; pertinent courses, computer experience and previous work history.
  • Transcript – Your transcript should include grades from freshman year to present. You may submit an unofficial transcript while applying, however, an official transcript will be required if you are chosen for hire.  If you are a graduate student, please upload both your undergraduate and graduate transcripts.  If you attended more than one university or college, please submit transcripts from all.  (You will be required to submit an official updated transcript each semester as a condition of eligibility for employment.)
  • Letter of Recommendation – One letter is required from a faculty member within your relevant area of study at your college or university.  A letter from a high school teacher or a previous employer is not acceptable.  If you are new to the school, consider asking your Advisor to write the letter.
  • Verification of Citizenship – If hired, you will need to present a certified copy of your birth certificate, a valid passport, and/or a certificate of naturalization.
