EQUAL MEANS EQUAL: FILM/DISCUSSION

Monday, December 13, 9:30AM-12:00PM
Cost: $15 Facilitator: Paula Guida

Watch the film trailer here: https://equalmeansequal.com/trailer/

Take an unflinching look at how women are treated in the United States today. By following both real life stories and precedent-setting legal cases, director Kamala Lopez discovers how outdated and discriminatory attitudes inform and influence seemingly disparate issues, from workplace matters to domestic violence, rape, and sexual assault to the foster care system, the healthcare system, and the legal system. Along the way, she reveals the inadequacy of present laws in place that claim to protect women, ultimately presenting a compelling and persuasive argument for the urgency of ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment.

Paula Guida holds a degree in secondary education/social studies and a master’s in school counseling from URI. She taught history at North Kingstown High School. For the OLLI at URI, she has taught many history and current events courses, most recently Tara Westover’s Educated: A Memoir in spring 2019.

INTRODUCTION TO THE MIDDLE EAST AND ISLAM

Thursdays, December 9 & 16, 2:00PM-4:00PM
Instructor: Jim Buxton  Cost: $35

This course will cater to those who, admittedly, don’t know that much about these two topics. In enhancing our understanding of the Middle East we will employ a lot of maps, charts, chronology in reviewing bottom line info. In doing so, we will be touching on the following: styles of government, disparity in wealth, ethnicity, religion including sects, and more. In reviewing Islam, we will be covering a certain amount of Islamic history. We will learn about surprising similarities and differences between Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. We will deal with the Sunni – Shia split, Islamic Fundamentalism, jihad and more.

Jim Buxton taught at South Kingstown HS for 32 years focusing on global studies and international relations. Between 2009 and 2020, he taught international politics at URI. Since 2012, he has taught many OLLI courses: the Arab Spring, the Arab-Israeli Conflict, Nuclear Proliferation, Costa Rica, Iraq and Iran, Syria and the ISIL crisis. He has also worked in the education department at Salve Regina, teaching an introduction to American education and supervising social studies student teachers.
