Police Arming Updates and Policies

Community Policing Philosophy

As URI moves into a new era of policing intended to provide a safer community for all, we also commit to working toward a philosophy of policing that embraces the approach often referred to as community policing. Community policing is typically described as the entire community, including police officers, recognizing that they share important community values, beliefs and goals. This implies that officers are confident of community support for their decisions and actions; and citizens are confident that officers are addressing the public safety issues that concern the community.

Let us all commit to continuing this discussion going forward.

Arming URI Police: The Comprehensive Process

In April 2014, the University announced that it would begin the process to arm its campus police officers. This decision was made after a year-long campus discussion with faculty, students, staff and other stakeholders to improve the capabilities of the URI police as first responders to life-threatening emergency situations.
