Communication Studies Coordinator for the Providence Campus
Welcome to the URI Providence Campus Communication Studies Program!
The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication Studies provides maximum flexibility in planning for a variety of academic and occupational goals. If you choose to major in Communication Studies, you will play an important role in your own curriculum planning, under the close supervision of your faculty advisor. You can also participate in specific curricular, extracurricular, and internship programs which will be planned and integrated into your program to fit with your specific area of focus. The curriculum for the major also encourages students to choose from courses offered in other departments, such as film studies, English and writing. Whether you are looking for broad based knowledge or a more focused approach, you can be certain that our dedicated faculty will work with you to meet your educational needs and goals.
If you major in Communication Studies at the Providence Campus you will have the added benefit of priority access to the COM class of your choice. This is especially important with upper division classes, which on the Kingston Campus are always filled with the high number of COM majors there. In addition, this degree program will provide you with excellent preparation for our MA in Communication Studies, which is also offered at the Providence Campus.
Please note that you will have to take some upper division courses in an on line format. Many upper division classes taught face-to-face would require taking them in Kingston. But you can complete your COM degree in Providence by taking these courses on line.
Our program will provide you with a unique opportunity to develop academic, research and practical skills for working with issues affecting urban populations and for future employment in community settings. Opportunities will be available to gain credit for assisting in research projects, and field placements in community settings are part of each major within the program.
If you choose to major in Communication Studies, you can specialize in business and professional communication, communication theory, rhetoric and public address, or media with a concentration area in rhetoric.
