Welcome to URI Providence’s NEW Film Media Program!
Film Media is an interdisciplinary program offering hands-on experience in documentary, experimental, and new media production, balanced with an emphasis on international cinemas, film/media history, criticism and theory. You may either major in Film/Media to work towards a Bachelor of Arts degree or you can minor in Film/Media. Some choose to earn a double major (in Communication Studies & Film/Media or English & Film/Media for example). In our program production and critical studies are intertwined in a single process of developing a meaningful vision and of grasping the social and cultural import of moving images. We believe the most relevant media-makers have a deep understanding of film history, theory and criticism, and that the best media scholars should engage in the production of media.
Our curriculum reflects the dynamic and diverse nature of this field. A wide range of courses is available to you—courses that examine the historical, theoretical and global approaches to the analysis and creation of moving images. Film media students also learn to work with the evolving and overlapping technologies involved in the production of moving images, (including digital video, 3D animation, game design, and new media), within ever broadening international and global contexts. You will have a high degree of flexibility in designing your own major within Film/Media, emphasizing those areas of production or critical studies which interest you most. And, as URI Providence is an urban campus, you will have options for gaining practical work experience through field placements in the active film industry community in the city.
Numerous career opportunities are available to Film/Media majors. The Film/Media program prepares students for employment in such areas as: independent filmmaking; animation and media design; cinema and television industries; advertising, marketing and public relations; and media criticism. Graduates of this program are also prepared to continue with graduate studies, in either film and media production for an M.F.A., or in a master’s or doctoral program in film and media studies.
