Sustainable Energy for the 21st Century

“A coordinated strategy for developing interdisciplinary Ocean Renewable Energy Program at URI”

This cluster topic, being interdisciplinary by nature, has broad ranging social and environmental implications, in addition to technical implications; hence the OREC will be approached through three general categories that span multiple colleges:

  1. Technical – One faculty position will be available based on technical contributions to the University in the general area of Ocean Renewable Energy. The faculty candidate may include expertise in offshore foundations, structural mechanics, fluid mechanics (including aeronautics), marine chemistry, mechanical design (turbines/blades), industrial design, power systems, grid connection and integration, etc.
  2. Environmental – One faculty position will be available based on expertise in environmental characterization and impacts related to Ocean Renewable Energy technologies. The faculty member may include expertise in ocean physical, chemical, biological, and geological sciences (or any combinations of these), ecosystem and habitat, marine spatial planning, physical evaluation of ocean energy resources, as well as local and global environmental impacts/benefits (such as green house gases emissions/sinks).
  3. Socio-economic – One faculty position will be available based on expertise in socio-economic or societal impacts of Ocean Renewable Energy technologies. Here, we seek a social scientist with experience on topics applicable to the human dimensions of offshore renewable energy production. Areas of expertise might include coastal governance and area use conflicts, challenges of facility siting (including sociological and anthropological aspects), ocean renewable energy project cost evaluation and financing, coastal amenity values and impacts to communities dependent upon resource-based industries (e.g., fishing or tourism). This individual will be expected to have strong research and analytical skills, with expertise in collection and analysis of primary data from human systems, such as use of focus groups, interview techniques, and/or survey methods.

The hiring process will be key to finding a suitable combination of candidates within these sub-areas, to address specific aspects of Ocean Renewable Energy. With all three candidates being hired at the same time, it is critical that the interdisciplinary search committee take into account the synergism between proposed candidates in these topic areas. This will be kept in mind when proposing the composition of the search committee.
