Our mission is to cultivate, protect, and commercialize inventions and discoveries which result from research and scholarly activities conducted at the University of Rhode Island (URI). We serve the community by connecting the research community and commercialization partners to engender the technology transfer of patents and other intellectual property.

Join our complimentary regional New England I-Corps short courses in partnership with MIT, tailored expressly for STEM researchers. These programs are perfect for you, whether you’re simply exploring an interest in entrepreneurship or are certain you want to create a startup. They offer engineers and scientists a prime opportunity to assess the commercial viability of their research or innovation. Applications are open to both individuals and teams.

The Office of Intellectual Property and Economic Development is a department within the Division of Research and Economic Development and reports to the Vice President for Research and Economic Development.

The role of the office includes the interpretation and implementation of the URI Intellectual Property Policy approved by the URI Board of Trustees on November 5, 2021.

The IPED is tasked by the URI Board of Trustees with protecting and managing intellectual property on its behalf.

We work hand-in-hand with the URI Research Foundation which complements our mission for technology transfer, commercialization, and partnering with industry collaborators.
