Assessment and Treatment of Depression in Older Adults in Primary Care

The management and diagnosis of behavioral health conditions have become a major health issue for older adults and their families. This workshop will focus on the assessment and treatment of depression and anxiety in older adults so that health care providers can address common concerns and needs of their patients and their families.

  1. Identify the prevalence of depression in older adults
  2. Utilize two brief screening tools for late life depression
  3. Recognize two ways medical issues can affect late life depression

Medication Management Related to Anxiety and Depression in Older Adults

60 Minutes

Depression is a treatable medical condition and older adults are at an increased risk for experiencing depression. It is common for patients to be over/under medicated and ongoing monitoring of medications is especially important in this population. This workshop will focus on the assessment and management of medication related to anxiety and depression in older adults, increasing the understanding of medication management for anxiety and depression so that health care providers can better address concerns and needs of their patients.

Learning Objectives

After completing this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss epidemiologic data on prevalence of depression and anxiety in late life in both community and nursing home settings
  2. Describe major medication classes used in the treatment of late-life anxiety and depression, including antidepressants, sedative-hypnotics, mood stabilizers and antipsychotics
  3. Discuss unique features relevant to medication management in late-life, including comorbid dementia, medical problems, substance use, delirium, sensory deficits and psychosocial triggers

Issues Related to Opioid Misuse with the Older Adult Population

The baby boomer generation is aging and the population of older adults is growing. At the same time, opioid misuse among older Americans is becoming an increasingly urgent public health concern. The population of older adults who misuse opioids is expected to double from 2004 to 2020.

  1. Identify opioid misuse risk in older adults
  2. Discuss use of screening tools for opioid misuse in older adults
  3. Recognize strategies to reduce opioid misuse in older adults
