URI students invited to apply for travel awards

RI NSF Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) | Infrastructure to Advance Life Sciences in the Ocean State (Track I) | Opportunity for students and postdocs enrolled at the University of Rhode Island

The Rhode Island NSF EPSCoR Academy is now offering travel awards to URI undergraduate- and graduate-level students and postdocs who are presenting their research at a conference within the United States.

Awards, each up to $1,000, will be made on a rolling basis. Applications must be received at least four weeks prior to the start of travel. Travel must be completed by July 31, 2015.

The topic of the conference presentation must align with one of the three research questions for EPSCoR Track I:

  1. What are the stress responses and evolutionary potentials of marine organisms in response to climate change?
  2. How are the structure and function of coastal marine food webs and biogeochemical cycling being directed in response to climate change?
  3. How will global climate change affect the ecology of marine pathogens and parasites?

For additional information on our research questions and themes, please see: https://web.uri.edu/rinsfepscor/research-questions/

Awardees must agree to provide proper acknowledgement of funding support from Rhode Island NSF EPSCoR Track I on all appropriate presentations, posters, papers etc. Acknowledgement language can be found on: https://web.uri.edu/rinsfepscor/resources-2/

Awardees must also agree to support our reporting requirements to the National Science Foundation by entering the travel award, and any presentations, posters, papers, etc., supported by the award into our online database (ER-Core). Per our reporting requirements, the travel award information must be entered as soon as the travel award is granted, with all other information entered by July 1, 2015.

Students and postdocs may apply for an award by emailing Dr. Carol Thornber, Principal Investigator, (thornber@uri.edu), with a copy to Sally J. Beauman, Project Administrator, (sbeauman@mail.uri.edu). Please include the following in your message:

  1. your name, email, major/graduate program/department, year of study (if a student), and name of faculty advisor/mentor;
  2. abstract and full citation with name of conference, dates, and location;
  3. a brief explanation of how the research/presentation aligns with our research;
  4. amount of funds requested with budget justification (this may include — but is not limited to — conference registration, airfare, and hotel); and,
  5. amount and details of any other funding supporting or potentially supporting the travel. Cost sharing is encouraged but not required.
