Our diets are loaded with liquid calories from sodas, fruit juices, energy drinks, vitamin waters, sweetened iced tea, coffee drinks and alcohol. Most people don’t realize how quickly these calories add up. A “fruit smoothie” sounds healthy but can contain as many as 1500 calories-almost an entire day’s allotment of calories! The average American consumes as much as 22% of their calories from liquids. Most of our waistlines cannot afford this. Liquid calories are frequently low in nutrients, don’t make us full, steer us away from healthier choices and are linked to the increase in obesity.
Our society needs to be more aware of the role that liquid calories play in our diets and overall health. Check your labels and drink, but drink wisely.
