SMILE Business Support

Why corporations support the SMILE Program

Supporting organizations like SMILE, is a significant component in strengthening the importance of biotechnology in Rhode Island while helping to inspire the importance of STEM to school age children.

Arnold Lumber Company participates in SMILE because we feel that it is important to invest in the Children in our community.  The significance of encouraging students in STEM is also vital to the future of our industry and the potential of future generations in our workforce.

The SMILE program is focused on science and technology along with engineering and math (the STEM pillars).  We see the work they do to inspire curiosity in young students and creating opportunities for them to have hands on experience in these STEM pillars as a means to help create an interest in these students to pursue a higher education degree in one or more of disciplines.  There is a talent gap we are beginning to see in these technical disciplines that needs to be addressed.  Having a direct relationship with the University and this program will help us begin to close that gap for the future while also continue to inspire the curiosity in future generations.”

Toray continues to support the SMILE program as it engages students in critical employment skills. Students that may not be exposed to STEM during their normal course work are given valuable time with experimental and real live learning to educate the students. Students are learning in environments that are fun and engaging that goes far beyond traditional classroom settings.
