URI celebrates Earth Day 2011

Despite a chilly, windy day on campus, URI’s First Annual Tree Planting to commemorate Earth Day went without a hitch. After a few words from Provost DeHayes and Vice President Weygand, including a quick tutorial on how to properly plant a tree, a Green Mountain Sugar Maple was welcomed into its new home outside of Green Hall. Those who came by to celebrate were invited to take turns shoveling some dirt and have the opportunity to proclaim that they helped plant a new tree at URI. We also had a “pot your own” table on hand with recycled mini-pot planters, fertilized soil, and a variety of vegetable, fruit, herb, and flower seeds available for free to anyone who wanted to take home a special planting of their own to remember the day. Visit the URI Sustainability Facebook page for more memorable photos.
