Bryna Wortman is an Associate Professor and Head of the Acting and Directing Programs at URI Theatre, where since 1999 she has directed diverse productions including Fiddler on the Roof, Rhode Island premieres of The Laramie Project, Caryl Churchill’s Top Girls and Laura Marks’s Unbound; also The Diary of Anne Frank (Kesselman), Anouilh’sAntigone, The Grapes of Wrath, Kushner’s Angels in America Part One,The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Neil LaBute’s Fat Pig, Craig Lucas’sSmall Tragedy, and Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. At other Rhode Island venues, Bryna directed acclaimed productions of The Seagull, Candida, andDoubt.
She has taught and/or directed in New York City and nationally at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Brooklyn College, Juilliard, Marymount Manhattan College, and the Universities of Iowa and Wisconsin. Directing highlights in New York City include Othello with Jimmy Smits, and off-Broadway Lavonne Mueller’s Little Victories with Mr. Smits and Linda Hunt andThe Only Woman General with the late, acclaimed Colleen Dewhurst as well as her twice-extended production of Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard at the Actors Studio. Bryna served as Artistic Director of the NYU Tisch School of the Arts Dramatic Writing Program’s New Plays Festival and supervised Circle Repertory Company’s new play development workshops under an NEA Directing Grant. She is a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC), and the League of Professional Theatre Women.
