The B.S. Biological Sciences program provides sound undergraduate training in basic sub-disciplines of biology and the supporting sciences of mathematics, chemistry, and physics. The program is highly flexible, allowing students to specialize in plant or animal biology, and in one or several sub-disciplines, such as ecology, physiology, evolution, behavior, cell or developmental biology.  The degree is ideal for students contemplating admission to a professional school (medical, dental, veterinary) or for graduate study in biological sciences and related fields.<\/p>\n\n\n

Bachelor of Science: General Options<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This major is the study of cells and the biological macromolecules\u2014including DNA, RNA, proteins, lipids and carbohydrates\u2014that define the structure and function of cells. The cell and molecular biology major provides excellent preparation for careers in medicine (the major automatically satisfies the pre-health course requirements), biomedical and life science research, and biotechnology. A student may get a B.S. degree in Cell and Molecular Biology (general track), or get a B.S. degree in Cell and Molecular Biology specializing in a track of biochemistry, biotechnology, or microbiology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bachelor of Science: Biochemistry Options<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The B.S in CMB provides students with a solid foundation in cell biology, molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, and molecular genetics. Further, experiential learning is an integral part of this degree program. This training will enable students to make meaningful contributions to global medical and environmental issues including the study of the molecular basis of cancer and infectious disease, heart disease, the development of next generation biofuels, and the genetic engineering of crops for increased productivity and improved disease resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bachelor of Science: Bioinformatics Options<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Students in the cell and molecular biology major may elect the bioinformatics option, which meets the guidelines of the International Society for Computational Biology Education Committee, and provides students with interdisciplinary trainings in preparation for diverse career opportunities in health sciences, medical research, environmental research, and biotechnological industry.  Students will take courses in many departments and colleges, including cell and molecular biology, computer sciences, biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics.  These courses will provide students with a well rounded education in general sciences and specialty training in bioinformatics and computational biology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following additional courses are required for this option: CMB 320, 450, 495; CSC 201, 211, 212. In addition, the students must complete at least 1 credit of a cell and molecular biology laboratory course above the 300-level and at least 9 credits in specialty concentration courses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bachelor of Science: Microbiology Options<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Microbiology includes the study of genetic engineering, cancer research, cellular mechanisms of infection, research in cell and molecular biology, and microbial ecology. Students apply technical approaches such as gene cloning, electron microscopy, and computer technology, to bacteria, viruses, algae, protozoa, fungi, and animal and plant cells. Graduates work in: hospital laboratories, the federal government (EPA, FDA, USDA) and industry. It is also an excellent foundation for graduate and professional schools, like dental, medical, veterinary and podiatry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
