The Property

The URI Environmental Education Center is situated on 2,300 acres of forests, wetlands, and old farmland—the W. Alton Jones Campus. Dedicated to environmental education, the Center has been offering quality day and residential programs for over 30 years. The residential camp-style facility includes a knotty pine dining lodge with field stone fireplaces, hardwood floors, and six meeting rooms. The six sleeping cabins have electricity, bunk beds, hot showers, and lavatory facilities. Each cabin sleeps between sixteen and twenty-four campers. The grounds include 10 miles of hiking trails, 200 acres of open fields and meadows, a waterfront on a private 75-acre lake, a seasonal working farm, and the rustic Poor Farm Barn. The summer Day Camp utilizes the historic Woodvale Farm and the botanically unique Nettie Marie Jones Nature Preserve. In summer the 19th century Woodvale Farm is home to sheep, cattle, chickens, pigs, rabbits, goats, and ducks. The scenic pastures, organic gardens, historical barn, and farm classroom provide an ideal day camp setting. Woodvale Farm Day Campers participate in outdoor lessons in farming, animal care, gardening, and colonial history.

Field Teacher/Naturalist
Description: 
URI’s Environmental Education Center is seeking qualified educators to plan, teach, and lead outdoor lessons in Ecology (forest, wetland, wildlife, and winter ecology), Social Science (living history, archaeology, farm life, early American history), Adventure (group building, low ropes, orienteering, outdoor skills), and Evening Programs (night hike, campfire, underground railroad, town meeting, etc.) to school students primarily in grades 4-8.  Evening duties required (two to four nights per week).  Other responsibilities are to help create a supportive community environment for students, visiting teachers, administrators, parents, and other staff, help with non-teaching resource projects on a rotating basis, help with limited kitchen duties, and participate in trail and grounds maintenance. Field Teacher/Naturalists also may have opportunities to lead environmental and outdoor adventure programs with adults, college students, and preschoolers.

Qualifications: Successful candidates will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Bachelor’s Degree in environmental studies, education, science, or a related field, prior experience teaching children and/or leading outdoor environmental education programs preferred. Certifications in First Aid and CPR are required by the starting date. Experience with song leading, story telling, and/or addressing large groups is a plus.

Benefits: $65 per day ($325 per 5-day workweek), $70 per day for certified teacher ($350 per 5-day workweek). Also includes private room (including breaks), housing with wireless internet,  dining hall meals when students are in residence, staff house food supplies, and free laundry room.

Summer Programs Coordinator (currently unavailable)
Description: 
Help oversee the operation of three summer camping programs involving up to 200 youth, ages 5-16. Primary pre-season responsibilities include hiring staff including program coordinators, counselors, teen expedition leaders, junior counselors, and waterfront and infirmary staff; overseeing Summer Camp Open House; attending camp and job fairs; making advanced program arrangements such as camp site reservations, arranging for guest speakers, etc.; ordering supplies and equipment; updating staff handbooks; assisting in the training of summer coordinators; giving camp tours; and upholding American Camping Association standards. Primary in-season responsibilities include assisting with staff training, troubleshooting, looking out for the safety of program participants, assisting with check-in and check-out, attending staff meetings, helping with rental van logistics, overseeing the waterfront, and otherwise assisting with the day to day operations of the camp programs.  Teen programs for ages 13-16 include backpacking, and multi-sport offerings. Farm and Forest Day Camp for ages 5 to 11 includes animal and garden care, exploration for fields and forests, and a campout for older campers. All camps utilize a private waterfront.

Overnight Camp Coordinator (currently filled)
Description:  
Coordinate an overnight summer camp program for approximately 120 campers each week for 6 weeks of week-long (six day Sunday – Friday) camp programs. Responsibilities: train and supervise up to 20 camp counselors and 8 junior counselors each week, carry out a 2-week staff training, enrichment and performance evaluations; carry out staff scheduling and program logistics; facilitate staff meetings and group orientation meetings with campers; coordinate field trips, camping trips and guest speakers; communicate with nursing and office staff; act as parent liaison; and monitor program quality.  Pre-season duties are office based and include, preparing for training, scheduling, program planning, trip scheduling, ordering supplies, and assisting with marketing (giving family tours, assisting at camp fairs, helping to coordinate open house, etc.).  Requires being on call (cell phone) 24 hours when camp is in session.  Camp themes highlight environmental education, adventure, and outdoor skills with campers ages 9-17.

Overnight Camp Assistant Coordinator (currently filled)
Description: 
Assist in the coordination of an overnight summer camp program for approximately 120 campers each week for 8 weeks of six-day camp programs (Sunday – Friday).  Responsibilities:  Play an active role in the 2-week staff training; assist in the supervision of 19 counselors and 8 junior counselors each week, including enrichment programs and performance evaluations and monitoring of program quality; assist with the staff scheduling and program logistics, facilitation of staff meetings, and handling of discipline and homesickness issues; organize and coordinate the daily evening programs with the assistance of the staff; supervise and direct the weekly resource staff; supervise the organization of meal pack-outs and equipment for camping and field trips; perform office duties as necessary; serve as coordinator in his/her absence; fill in for counselors in emergencies, other duties as required.  Overnight Camp Assistant Coordinators will also act as house parents in staff houses to facilitate staff interactions, and uphold policy. Overnight Camp Counselor
Description: 
Teach and lead campers, ages 9-16 during eight six-day residential camping programs.  Camp Counselors oversee safety and teach or lead environmental education, outdoor adventure, no-trace camping and survival skills, campfires, group games, evening programs, skits, and arts and crafts.  General counselors will lead groups of campers ages 9-16  in a variety of different activities as well as field trips.  Camp Counselors will also assist with Junior Counselor training and development.  Camp Counselors also supervise campers in cabins overnight and at mealtimes and during free times on a rotating basis.  Other responsibilities are to assist with waterfront supervision; help create a supportive community environment for campers and other staff; assist with camp preparation, clean-up, opening day check-in, and family programs; and instill in each camper an appreciation for the natural environment.

Archery and Backpacking Specialist
Description: 
Teach and lead campers, ages 9-16 during eight six-day residential camping programs with primary responsibility focused on teaching archery and/or backpacking.  The Archery Specialists will teach archery instruction to campers ages 9-16 as well as other activities as needed. The Backpacking specialists will lead short term (2-night) backcountry backpacking trips for campers ages 11-13 including skills instruction, packing, orienteering, safety, leave-no-trace camping and survival skills. While training will be provided, at least some previous experience is helpful. Woodvale Farm Day Camp Coordinator

Day Camp Counselor
Description:
 
URI’s Environmental Education Center is seeking qualified individuals to teach and lead campers in a summer day camp program for 90 children each week ages 5-12.  Responsibilities:  supervise 8-12 day campers; teach outdoor lessons in either forest and wetland ecology and outdoor skills or sustainable agriculture, humane animal care, early American history, organic gardening, and cultural history, or outdoor adventure including rock climbing, kayaking and team building. Day Camp Counselors participate in cleaning classroom and outdoor areas, animal feeding and care, cleaning stalls, gardening, gear organization and clean up, etc.  The day starts at 8:00 am with chores and preparation for the campers. Campers arrive at 8:30 am and stay until 3:30 pm.  During the program, students are divided into groups of eight to ten with one Counselor and one Junior Counselor.  Most groups will also have a Junior Counselor to assist.  At the Woodvale Farm Day Camp, campers age 5-8 help out on the farm, work in the gardens, prepare food, participate in farm demonstrations, and go on hikes.  At the Eco-Zone Day Camp, campers age 8-11 participate in activities involving forest, field, and freshwater wetland ecology, and go on a Thursday night camp out.  All campers go on hikes, make crafts, and swim.  Eco-Zone campers also canoe.  After the campers leave, there is a clean-up period and brief staff meeting. The day ends at 4:30 pm.  Supervising campers while riding the shuttle bus to and from camp is required for some staff members.

Qualifications: Previous experience working with young children is required. Enthusiasm, excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a demonstrated interest in the environment and education are a must.  Current certifications in standard first aid and community CPR are required.  Pets are not allowed on site.  All final applicants will be subjected to a criminal background check.

Eco-Zone- $2475$1755

Additional $50 per week for shuttle bus supervision.  Includes paid training period.

Waterfront Manager
Description: 
URI’s Environmental Education Center is seeking a qualified individual to coordinates all aspects of an eight-week free-swim waterfront program on a 75-acre freshwater lake including direct supervision and training of all waterfront staff and of all campers, ages 5-16 during waterfront aquatic activities. Provides direct supervision, training, and on-going practice and enrichment sessions to two lifeguards and over 30 camp staff members when engaged in water activities. Responsible for the camp’s compliance with all waterfront regulations and policies. Must provide water safety and canoe (small craft) safety training to staff and campers and lead waterfront festivals and other special events as needed. The waterfront manager assists the camp coordinators with other camp activities when requested and prepares a year-end written evaluation of the waterfront program. Some weekend and evening hours may be required. All camps utilize the private lakefront beach.

Qualifications: The Waterfront Manager Applicants must hold current Rhode Island Non-surf Lifeguard Certification (includes a minimum of Standard First Aid, adult/infant/child CPR or CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguarding and passing the Rhode Island Non-surf test which costs $20) and a valid driver’s license. Certification as an American Red Cross Small Craft Safety Course Instructor is preferred. All certifications must be current for the entire summer. Previous lifeguarding experience required; canoe and swim instruction experience, Water Safety Instructor, or Lifeguard Instructor preferred.  Must have at least six weeks previous experience in a management or supervisory position at a similar aquatic area (or have completed aquatics management or supervision training from a nationally-recognized aquatics organization). Lifeguard (summer camp)
Description:
 URI’s Environmental Education Center is seeking a qualified individual to assist the waterfront manager in conducting an eight-week free swim waterfront program on a 75-acre freshwater lake. Provides direct supervision to campers ages 5-16. Assists waterfront manager in providing water safety training and supervision to over 30 camp staff members when engaged in water activities. Must abide by and enforce all waterfront rules and regulations and must participate in on-going training, enrichment, and practice sessions. Responsible for canoe/small craft instruction, leading waterfront festivals and other special events and assisting with other camp activities when requested. Some evening and weekend hours may be required. All camps utilize a private lakefront.

Qualifications: Applicants must hold a current Rhode Island Non-surf Lifeguard Certification (includes a minimum of Standard First Aid, adult/infant/child CPR or CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguarding and passing the Rhode Island Non-surf test which costs $20) and a valid driver’s license. Camp Nurse/Student Camp Nurse/Nurses’s Assistant
Description:
 Serve as a 24-hour on-site liaison for an off-site/on-call Registered Nurse in the operation of a busy residential camp infirmary for three summer camping programs involving up to 200 youth, ages 5-16. Primary responsibilities are for a residential camp with 110 campers ages 8-13. Duties include observation of children while they take authorized medication, record keeping, assessing seriousness of injuries, providing first aid treatment, reassuring campers and dealing with homesickness, and communicating with parents. Assists R.N. in providing training and guidance on medical and safety procedures to 35 camp staff members. R.N. is on site for several hours each day and on call 24 hours each day.

Qualifications: Successful applicants will have RN or student with a minimum of one year of clinical experience and good nursing assessment skills or EMT certification, an ability to relate to the physical, emotional, and behavioral needs of children, and excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and a driver’s license are helpful. Certification in Community CPR and First Aid required.  For non-nursing students, EMT certification and previous experience working with children and/or camps preferred. Work schedule: Sunday noon to Friday afternoon with some time-off arranged during the week. All final applicants will be subjected to a criminal background check.

Animal and Garden Manager
Responsibilities: 
Oversee the day to day functions of a seasonally-operated historical, 12-acre, working farm including facilities maintenance, animal care, chores, and gardening. Responsible for the care of a herd of sheep, one to three heifers, pigs, goats, chickens, ducks, turkeys, and rabbits plus two gardens totaling approximately one-third of an acre. Carry out all duties in a manner that makes the farm, animals, and gardens safe, usable, approachable, and as accessible as possible to children. Maintain relations with several local farmers who assist in the operation of the farm.

Qualifications: Requires previous experience caring for farm animals and gardens plus demonstrated ability to carry out maintenance. Flexibility, ability to work independently, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills are a must. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license with no risk-creating infractions. Must be able sustain physical tasks throughout the workday and to lift 50+ pounds.  Previous experience working with children and a bachelors degree are preferred but not required. Junior Counselors assist Counselors in teaching natural and cultural history, sensory awareness, farming, canoeing, no-trace camping, survival skills, and arts and crafts. The position includes helping to lead games, songs, skits, and tell stories. Junior Counselors supervise campers during recreation times, meal times, and at the waterfront, assist with camp preparation, clean-up, camper check-in, and parents programs, serve as a positive role model for young children, and help to create a supportive camp community. Providing extra support to homesick campers and others who require more individualized attention is a key role that Junior Counselors fulfill.

At Overnight Camp, Junior Counselors also help supervise campers in cabins and on overnight field trips.  Day Camp Junior Counselors help out with animal feeding and cleaning of animal stalls and classroom areas. Supervising campers while riding the shuttle bus to and from camp may be required for some Day Camp Junior Counselors. Please note, if you are assigned to Eco-Zone Day camp you are required to participate in the weekly campout on Thursday night. This is an educational/training position that will involve being paired up with one or more counselors and weekly feedback/evaluation.

Qualifications: Successful applicants will have experience working with children. Previous summer camping experience is preferred. Requires demonstrated maturity, energy, enthusiasm, excellent communication skills and an interest in the environment and education. Experience leading songs and telling stories is helpful. CPR and First Aid are recommended but not required. Must be 15 years or older and preferably have completed the 9th grade for Day Camp, 16 years old or older and preferably have completed the 10th grade for Overnight Camp before the first week of employment.

Compensation: Compensation for Day Camp includes $100 per week.  Compensation for Overnight Camp includes $120 per week.  Transportation is required to camp or the shuttle bus stop (when shuttle space is available) each day for day camp and to camp each Sunday and home on Friday for Overnight Camp.

Dates of Employment: Junior Counselors must work a minimum of 3 weeks during the summer. The summer work schedule will be determined by early June. All junior counselors must attend an orientation and training session on June 23, 2018 (unpaid).
