Bertwell received a BFA from the University of Rhode Island and spent most of his career in the arts as a Tamarind trained collaborative printmaker. He had to give up printing after developing an allergy to solvent and since then has been teaching foundation drawing at URI. This has given him the opportunity to pursue his own art. In 2012 he had a one-person exhibition, The Elements of Landscape, in the Main Gallery at the University of Rhode Island and in 2015 Fractured at the One-Way Gallery in Narragansett. Group exhibitions include the Newport Art Museum Annual Members Exhibition, One-Way Gallery, Faculty Biennials at URI, the Chazan Gallery, and the Scenes of Rhode Island exhibition at the Atrium Gallery in Providence.
Bertwell’s research interests involve an exploration of process and mark making using elements of landscape. Drawn first on site with graphite, they are enlarged and executed in graphite, charcoal, watercolor or pen.
