{"id":13857,"date":"2022-04-21T11:45:16","date_gmt":"2022-04-21T15:45:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/artsci\/?p=13857"},"modified":"2022-04-21T11:53:10","modified_gmt":"2022-04-21T15:53:10","slug":"emily-diamond-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/artsci\/news\/emily-diamond-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Emily Diamond Recipient of Research Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/meet\/emily-diamond\/\">Emily Diamond<\/a>, assistant professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/academics\/communication-studies-b-a\/\">communication studies<\/a> and marine affairs, was the recent recipient of the 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/research-admin\/externalrelations\/excellence\/\">Research and Scholarship Excellence Award<\/a> from URI\u2019s Division of Research and Economic Development. \u201cMy research investigates how various aspects of messaging, including framing, source effects, and identity relevance, impact environmental attitudes and behaviors,\u201d she says. \u201cI am fascinated by how the way we as a society talk about environmental issues shapes how people perceive them.\u201d Her past research explores how \u201cusing messages that resonate with different identities, such as parental, rural, or place-based identities, can make environmental messaging more effective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diamond joined URI\u2019s faculty in 2019, and says the partnership between the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/harrington\/\">Harrington School of Communication and Media<\/a> and the College of the Environment and Life Sciences drew her to campus, as well as the opportunity to collaborate with experts in the Metcalf Institute, the Coastal Institute, and the Graduate School of Oceanography. \u201cURI has invested in becoming a leader in the field of environmental communication,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd URI prioritizes interdisciplinary education and research, making this a perfect fit for investigating big questions that&nbsp;don&#8217;t fit into a single discipline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Early on in her career, Diamond realized that public opinion on policy issues was influenced by how information on these issues is presented. Interested in better understanding how effective communication strategies build bipartisanship on pressing environmental and coastal issues, Diamond\u2019s appreciation for URI\u2019s commitment to interdisciplinary initiatives doesn\u2019t end at involvement in the classroom. \u201cI love how connected URI is to the community,\u201d Diamond says. \u201cWe prioritize engaging with community groups, doing research that positively impacts our local community, and linking students with community organizations through experiential learning.
