{"id":17609,"date":"2025-04-29T11:19:01","date_gmt":"2025-04-29T15:19:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/artsci\/?p=17609"},"modified":"2026-01-14T11:07:30","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T16:07:30","slug":"the-department-of-art-and-art-history-hosts-annual-juried-art-exhibit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/artsci\/news\/the-department-of-art-and-art-history-hosts-annual-juried-art-exhibit\/","title":{"rendered":"The Department of Art and Art History Hosts Annual Juried Art Exhibit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">KINGSTON, R.I. \u2013 April 29, 2025 \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The annual<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/art\/2025-annual-juried-student-exhibit\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">juried art exhibit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Green Hall features 50 works of art in various mediums by URI students taking classes in the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/art\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Department of Art and Art History<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Students who are selected are eligible for two awards: the Juror&#8217;s Excellence Award and the Dean&#8217;s Choice Award, which were awarded on April 17.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/providenceartclub.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Providence Art Club<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (the oldest Art Club in the United States) Gallery Manager Michael Rose served as juror and was tasked with selecting pieces that he felt were outstanding and worthy of &#8216;Awards of Excellence&#8217; from among all the works in the juried exhibit. The prize winners received a certificate and a gift card to BLICK, an art supplies store.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/english\/meet\/jeannette-e-riley\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jeannette E. Riley<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, also chose three works that stood out in her estimation from all the work in the exhibit. Winners receive a $200 gift card.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17612  alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/artsci\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1132\/Juried-Gallery-3-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"488\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;font-weight: 400\">Twenty-seven students and nearly 50 pieces were selected for this year&#8217;s exhibit out of almost 100 entries. Their work ranges from two-dimensional to three-dimensional in mediums such as clay, ceramic, metal, wood, and acrylic, as well as digital images and film. Applicants are not restricted to submitting only one piece of work or work from previous years, but they are required to submit individual applications for each piece.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;This is a really good exercise for life,&#8221; Gallery Director<\/span><a style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/art\/meet\/steven-pennell\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stephen Pennell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> said. &#8220;There is a call out for art, and there are deadlines. You must do certain things by certain dates to be entered and chosen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;font-weight: 400\">Announced on February 1, students had until the end of mid-March to apply for admission. Through the application process, students gain insight into how to photograph their pieces, work with deadlines, and build connections in their field<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;font-weight: 400\">&#8220;We photograph the work and put it on social media so that your reputation is out there,&#8221; Pennell said. &#8220;If your name and your work is out on the internet, people can see it without actually being at URI\u2026 so it&#8217;s an important experience to add to your resume.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Katlan Machado &#8217;25,<\/span><a style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/history\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">history<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and<\/span><a style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/soc-anth\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">anthropology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, has three sculptures featured, titled <\/span><i style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Barrels of Fun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><i style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Hello Lucy!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><i style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Boo Boo Bones<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Students Andrew Garcia, Aspen Spencer, and Emerie Peterson received the Dean&#8217;s Choice Awards. Logan Firestone, Karla Monterroza, Emerie Peterson, and Ella Stinnette received the Juror&#8217;s Excellence Award.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;font-weight: 400\">&#8220;I really just feel so thankful for being awarded this,&#8221; sophomore Logan Firestone said. &#8220;I think it will help me realize that I need to go for it. Sometimes, I overthink and decide not to do something because of what the outcome might be, but sometimes, throwing yourself into something will give you something positive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Firestone&#8217;s works <\/span><i style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sienna<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><i style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hole in the Wall<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are featured twice in the exhibit.
