{"id":17675,"date":"2025-05-12T15:14:52","date_gmt":"2025-05-12T19:14:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/artsci\/?p=17675"},"modified":"2025-05-12T15:14:52","modified_gmt":"2025-05-12T19:14:52","slug":"chinese-section-celebrates-the-end-of-the-academic-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/artsci\/news\/chinese-section-celebrates-the-end-of-the-academic-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Chinese Section Celebrates the End of the Academic Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">KINGSTON, R.I. \u2013 May 12 \u2013 The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/languages\/academics\/chinese\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chinese Section<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/chineseflagship\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chinese Flagship Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> within the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/languages\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Modern and Classical Languages and Literature Department<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> held two events on April 30 to showcase the talent of its students. The first, \u201cVoices Across Borders: A Bilingual Research Showcase,\u201d highlighted the work of Chinese Flagship students. The second was the 2025 Chinese Program Award Ceremony.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Voices Across Borders is the culmination of a year-long research project, where Chinese Flagship students explore a topic that bridges their major and Chinese language studies. The Chinese Flagship program is one of eight unique programs in the United States where students can progress from a beginner level to professional fluency in Mandarin Chinese. With a community of expert <\/span><a style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/chineseflagship\/people\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">faculty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, fellow students of all levels, and staff providing support at every step, students will feel confident and prepared as they venture into the world.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Taught by<\/span><a style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/languages\/meet\/qingu-yang\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Qingyu Yang<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/chineseflagship\/meet\/yiping-zhang\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yiping Zhang<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Spring 2025, and <\/span><a style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/chineseflagship\/meet\/jiangping-cai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jiangping Cai<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/chineseflagship\/meet\/yu-wu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yu (Joyce) Wu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Fall 2024, the course starts with students focusing on developing a research question and conducting a bilingual literature review using sources in both English and Chinese in the first semester. In the second semester, they collect data, analyze, and draw conclusions\u2014working closely with faculty to refine their ideas and language use. Students then prepare posters in both languages and practice presenting their work to diverse audiences, including peers, faculty, and external guests.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis process not only sharpens their academic research and intercultural communication skills but also builds confidence. It\u2019s always rewarding to see how proud they are to share what they\u2019ve accomplished,\u201d said Zhang, Associate Teaching Professor of Chinese.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17677  alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/artsci\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1132\/chinese-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"346\">Topics ranged from Learning Languages with Artificial Intelligence by Gilda Gilbert,<\/span><a style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/cs\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">computer science<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and Chinese; to The Spread of Zoonotic Diseases in Western and Eastern Countries by Jayda Silva,<\/span><a style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/favs\/academics\/animal-science-and-technology\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">animal science<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and Chinese; to Research on Taiwanese and American Stress by Aidan St. Jean,<\/span><a style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/psychology\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">psychology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and Chinese.&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Later that evening, the 2025 Chinese Program Award Ceremony celebrated the hard work of faculty and students. The Flagship Director and Chinese Section Head, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/chineseflagship\/meet\/yu-wu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Yu (Joyce) Wu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> handed out several recognition awards, including a &#8220;Flagship Excellent Student Award&#8221; for Anashelly Herrera, &#8220;Most Improved Student Award&#8221; for Meadow Sherlock, and a &#8220;Service Award&#8221; for Annie Liang. Five students were also granted the prestigious $125,000 Boren Scholarship. By supporting students who study critical languages in strategic regions of the world, the scholarship helps build a pipeline of future leaders with deep global understanding and cross-cultural communication skills.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;font-weight: 400\">It provides generous financial support for immersive study abroad in Taiwan next year, and opens doors to meaningful public service careers in federal agencies.
