Coming to the University of Rhode Island from a small Massachusetts town, I was looking for a program that would not only teach me the fundamentals of writing and reporting but also provide real opportunities to grow. What I found was a program that goes far beyond the typical classroom experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Journalism<\/a> is a unique field of study, especially at the Harrington School of Communication and Media<\/a>. When you imagine the average college course, you may think of big lecture halls filled with nearly 100 students. And while this is the case for many majors, URI\u2019s journalism curriculum operates in much smaller classes, usually ranging from around 10 to 25 students per course, each designed to focus on a specific aspect of the field.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From required courses such as media ethics and multimedia to elective courses like photojournalism and magazine writing, students can design their academic careers to suit their interests and gain a wide range of skills across the field. On campus, there are internships available, such as my own with the Harrington Social Media Agency<\/a>, that allow you to explore different elements of the journalism field. Many students work as photographers, social media interns, sports broadcasters, newsroom participants, writers, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was lucky enough to attend a high school with an advanced journalism program, which helped build my resume early on. Before even setting foot on campus as a freshman, I was given the opportunity to apply for a writing position with the College of Arts & Sciences and, soon thereafter, received it.<\/p>\n\n\n

Over the past two years, I\u2019ve had the opportunity to cover campus events, faculty research, student achievements, and guest lectures while also expanding into multimedia storytelling. One of the most impactful parts of this experience has been seeing how each assignment pushes me to grow\u2014not just as a writer, but as a storyteller, learning how to connect with an audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This position has not only strengthened my skills but also opened doors I hadn\u2019t expected. Through my work at URI, I secured a position with Rhode Island Monthly, where I spent the summer as an editorial intern. There, I gained firsthand experience in a professional newsroom environment and had the chance to attend networking events that further expanded my connections in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

URI has built a vast network of local newspapers and stations offering varying levels of expertise and experience, and many students earn their first jobs post-graduation through the connections they have built throughout URI\u2019s network.<\/p>\n\n\n

What makes URI\u2019s journalism program stand out isn\u2019t the coursework or the opportunities; it\u2019s designed to prepare students for real world experience in the field. From hands-on classes that function as newsrooms to internships and strong networking connections, students are actively practicing journalism as they learn about it. Each opportunity I have been given has built upon the last, shaping my skills and confidence as a writer and reporter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking ahead, I hope to continue building on these experiences over the next two years by taking on more advanced reporting opportunities and expanding my work in multimedia journalism. After graduation, I plan to pursue a career in editorial writing or magazine journalism, ideally continuing to tell stories that inform, engage, and connect with readers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

URI hasn\u2019t just given me an education in journalism; it has given me a clear path for the future. And for students considering the program, that\u2019s what makes all the difference.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
