Read her full interview below.

What course(s) do you teach, or have you taught, at URI?

I currently teach Consumer Behavior and I recently stepped into a Special Topics course on Marketing Strategy and AI at the undergraduate level. I teach Buyer Behavior and Marketing Management in the MBA program; Knowledge Dissemination in the DBA program; and PhD seminars. Previously, I had the opportunity to work on the first year experience with a course that was focused on Solving Grand Social and Ecological Challenges a couple of times. That means that the classes I’ve taught in the past few years have ranged from groups of seasoned business executives that could sit at a dinner table to groups of first year students that could fill an auditorium.

What is your proudest teaching moment of the last year?

My proudest teaching moment of the last year took place outside of the classroom on the curriculum development side. I had the opportunity to collaborate with fantastic faculty from the College of Business, the Graduate School of Oceanography, and the College of Environment and Life Sciences and staff and deans from the College of Business and URI Online on the reimagined Blue MBA. I served as a convener and project manager, of sorts. I’m really proud to share what my talented colleagues worked on when we relaunch this summer (2026). It will be a signature program for URI, The Ocean University.

What is one piece of teaching advice that you have received that you would like to pass on to others?

I was advised to read L. Dee Fisk’s book on Creating Significant Learning Experiences pretty early in my teaching career. I’ve revisited it many times since, and I’ve used it in the pedagogy class for PhD students. It provides a great framework for figuring out what matters most, and designing courses (or curricula) with that end in mind. Sometimes when we try to tackle too much content, we sacrifice learning.

What do you hope students look back on in ten years and say about your class(es)?

It sounds basic, but I hope what they learned is useful in their careers and in their lives. And I hope they still feel curious. I love it when they share what they’ve done recently that reminded them of something we talked about, or when they tell me about what they’ve read recently – and when they ask what I’m reading. If they know how to use what they learned about and they want to keep learning, that’s a win.

What is a time when an assignment/activity did not go as planned, and how did you make it a teachable moment? What did you learn about yourself?

It would likely be more challenging to cite an example where everything went as planned! I try to meet students where they are and to capture what is currently happening in the multi-trillion dollar experiment we have going on around us. Both are always changing. And then I use a fair number of exercises and applications where students need to think through different alternatives or scenarios. So, none of that is carefully scripted. If I have a strong base for what I want students to learn, I am comfortable with exploration that can feel more like a journey – and I hope the unexpected parts can create learning that lasts longer and, at a minimum, abilities to navigate uncertainty that students value down the road.

Share your favorite place to go in Rhode Island? Why is this your favorite place?
Narragansett Beach has a special place in my heart and in our lives. It has been a go-to place to put things in perspective, to recharge, and to reconnect, and it was a main character in several important events in our lives. We are very lucky.

What are you streaming that you want others to know about?
So far, I am really enjoying the reboot of Scrubs. I will likely rewatch Ted Lasso before the next season comes out.

Would you like to nominate a faculty member to be included in an ATL Monthly Spotlight?

Submit this form for consideration.

Meet ATL’s Faculty Spotlight for March 2026, Christy Ashley.
