As the University of Rhode Island continues to comply with the new Title II regulations on digital accessibility<\/a>,<\/a> the Office for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (ATL) is here to help instructors understand, navigate, and incorporate accessibility into their teaching practice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faculty and instructors do not need to become accessibility experts on their own. ATL can serve as a starting point and partner as you consider the accessibility of your courses, instructional materials, assessments, and learning experiences. We can help you think through accessibility from a teaching and learning perspective, identify practical strategies for your courses, and connect you with colleagues and resources across URI when additional or specialized support is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accessible Teaching & Learning Resources & Partner Offices<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Accessibility is a shared institutional responsibility, and a number of URI offices provide expertise, resources, and support related to accessible teaching and learning. Below is a list of partnering offices and resources that can help instructors navigate common accessibility questions specifically related to course development, instructional materials, assessments, and learning experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accessibility in Educational Technology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

ITS Teaching & Learning Services (TLS)<\/a> provides <\/a>Accessibility in Ed Tech resources<\/a> to help instructors create accessible content in Brightspace, the university\u2019s Learning Management System (LMS),and across commonly used software tools\u00a0 in Microsoft, Google, and Adobe platforms. These resources can be particularly helpful when creating or revising digital course materials. There is also TLS\u2019s Knowledge Base article<\/a> that contains helpful information for ensuring the accessibility of the university\u2019s LMS, Brightspace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supporting Instructors that Teach Online<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

URI Online<\/a> supports faculty who design and teach online courses and programs at URI. Through its Faculty Resources<\/a>, URI Online provides guidance, professional learning opportunities, and instructional design support related to online course design and teaching, including strategies for creating accessible and inclusive online learning experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faculty teaching online can also explore URI Online’s Teaching Online<\/a> and Online Course Design<\/a> resources for practical guidance on accessibility, course organization, instructional materials, student engagement, and effective online teaching practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disability, Access, and Inclusion (DAI)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Disability, Access, and Inclusion (DAI)<\/a> is responsible for promoting compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act by accepting, reviewing, and approving reasonable accommodation requests made by students in their role as students. Instructors seeking information specifically about their responsibilities and working with student accommodations can begin with DAI\u2019s Get Started Guide for Faculty<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DAI should be consulted for guidance related to student accommodations and the implementation of approved accommodations within courses and academic programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Office of Equal Opportunity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

URI\u2019s Office of Equal Opportunity<\/a> administers the University\u2019s civil rights compliance programs, including leading ADA and Rehabilitation Act compliance. The University\u2019s ADA Compliance landing page<\/a> provides information about the University\u2019s responsibilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Rehabilitation Act, and other applicable civil rights requirements, as well as the different ADA partners, ADA Liaisons, and University policies guiding the administration of institutional accessibility efforts.
